Conversation to Markdown exports ChatGPT conversations as readable Markdown, preserving headings, lists, tables, links, code blocks, formulas, and message roles. WHAT'S NEW IN 1.6.8 • Fixed an issue where an export could contain messages from a previously viewed conversation under the current conversation's title. • Message capture and attachment collection now use only the active conversation, excluding pages ChatGPT keeps loaded in the background. • The export stops with an error if you switch conversations during capture or attachment lookup, preventing mixed results. • Improved batch readiness checks so messages from a previously viewed conversation are not mistaken for the newly opened conversation. LONG CONVERSATIONS ChatGPT renders only part of a long conversation at a time. The extension scrolls through the conversation, collects messages as they appear, and restores your starting scroll position. The popup shows progress and lets you stop the scan. If the scan cannot establish the conversation boundaries, the export includes a warning. SAVE MARKDOWN AND ATTACHMENTS Save the conversation and supported images, uploaded documents, and generated files to Downloads/chatgpt-export/. Successfully downloaded attachments are linked using local file paths. ChatGPT Library documents shown only as preview citations are not downloaded automatically. Their filenames remain in the Markdown with a missing-file notice. Open the citation in ChatGPT and download the document manually. A manual download does not rewrite an existing export warning. Some attachments may be unavailable, expired, or unsupported. Check export warnings and confirm that the linked files exist before relying on an export as a complete backup. The extension exports the rendered conversation, not every alternate branch or hidden message. PROJECT EXPORTS Export conversations listed in a ChatGPT Project sidebar. Batch mode supports pause, resume, and an optional ZIP archive. Incomplete exports remain eligible for retry. Keep the extension popup open while the export runs. READABLE FILE NAMES Exports use the conversation title and a timestamp. Attachments use numbered filenames. Non-Latin titles are supported. Re-exporting within the same minute can overwrite the Markdown file; attachments with the same names can also be overwritten. PRIVACY Markdown conversion and ZIP creation happen in your browser. File and batch metadata requests use your existing signed-in ChatGPT session. The extension downloads files directly from supported ChatGPT file services. A small export metadata index and the latest error are stored locally for resume and diagnostics. No developer-operated server, telemetry, or analytics is used. The developer does not receive your conversations or files. HOW TO USE 1. Open a conversation on chatgpt.com. 2. Click the Conversation to Markdown extension icon. 3. Leave “Save .md + files to chatgpt-export/” checked to save files. Uncheck it to copy Markdown to the clipboard instead. 4. Press “Copy as Markdown”. 5. Keep the popup and conversation tab open until the export finishes. 6. Review any warnings and check the saved attachments. Saving is enabled by default. In save mode, the clipboard is left unchanged. Clipboard mode does not download attachments. Open source under the MIT License.
