The Contingency Zero Security Extension is the official companion tool for the Contingency Zero desktop app (app.contingencyzero.com). It exists for one reason: to keep your private encryption key off the website itself, so your emergency plan and estate documents stay protected by true zero-knowledge encryption even when you're working from a browser instead of your phone. === Before you start === Your Contingency Zero account and plan must first be created in the Contingency Zero mobile app — the desktop website does not support account creation. From the mobile app, generate your recovery QR code and save it to your computer using whatever method is convenient for you: email it to yourself, save it through cloud storage, transfer it over USB, or any other means you trust. === How it works === Contingency Zero protects your passwords, documents, and final wishes with end-to-end, zero-knowledge encryption — meaning only you (and the people you choose to share with) can ever read your data. Your private key lives on your mobile device, where your account was created. To access your plan on desktop: 1. Log in to app.contingencyzero.com. Once you're logged in, the extension becomes enabled for that session. 2. Click the Contingency Zero Security Extension icon in your browser toolbar. 3. Upload the recovery QR code file you saved from your mobile app. The extension decrypts your key locally, separate from the website's own code. Your plan is then read from the server in its encrypted form and decrypted inside the extension, so it becomes readable in your browser — without your private key ever being exposed to or processed by app.contingencyzero.com directly. === Why install it === Required for desktop access — without it, logging in to app.contingencyzero.com only gets you as far as an encrypted plan; the extension is what unlocks it. Keeps zero-knowledge intact — your private key is handled inside the extension, isolated from the website's page scripts, preserving the same security model that protects your data on mobile. Works with any transfer method — email, cloud storage, USB, or any other way you get your recovery QR code from your phone to your PC.
