Compat renders pages that only work in Internet Explorer — including ActiveX, VBScript, Adobe SVG Viewer, and classic MSHTML document modes — inside a Chrome tab on Windows. Users stay in Chrome. Compat hosts the real Windows IE engine (IWebBrowser2 / MSHTML) beside Chromium through a small native helper. No second browser window, and no rewriting of the page. A 14-day full-feature trial is included so you can confirm compatibility before buying. After the trial, a paid seat licence is required. Chrome extensions cannot host Internet Explorer’s rendering engine by themselves. Compat installs a per-user Windows helper (LegacyTabHost.exe) that talks to the extension over Native Messaging and overlays a real MSHTML session on the tab. The helper needs no administrator rights. The first time you add Compat, Chrome opens a setup page that downloads the installer and checks that the helper is connected. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS 1. Why do I have to install a helper .exe? The IE engine cannot be loaded from extension JavaScript. The helper is a 32-bit native process that creates IWebBrowser2 and attaches it to the Chrome tab. 2. Is the helper safe? It is scoped to the sites you open with Compat. Auto URLs and exceptions limit which pages use the legacy engine. Licensing and trial checks talk only to https://compat.app/. 3.
