A tiny bear lives at the bottom of your browser. Cocoa walks along the foot of the page while you read. He sits down. He waves at nothing in particular. He dances when the mood takes him, rolls into a somersault, and if you leave him alone long enough he curls up and falls asleep — and stretches when he wakes. He is not a widget, a tracker or a productivity system. He is a small companion for the hours you already spend in a browser, and he is built so that he can never, ever get in your way. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ■ WHAT HE DOES ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Ten moves, chosen at random, forever: walk, run, crawl, sit, idle, wave, dance, spin, somersault and sleep. Trips go up and across the window as well as along the bottom, so he uses the whole page rather than pacing one strip of it. FOLLOWS YOUR MOUSE. Leave the cursor still for a moment and he comes over to see what you are looking at. Move it away and he goes back to what he was doing. FALLS ASLEEP. Ninety seconds of nothing and he settles down for a nap. He wakes up with a stretch when something happens. TAKES THE SCREEN AS A SCREENSAVER. Leave the browser alone for a few minutes and he wanders the whole window instead of the bottom of it. Move the mouse and he goes back where he was. Set it to 2, 5, 10 or 30 minutes, or switch it off. AND HE REACTS TO YOU: • Click him and he reacts to being petted. • Drag him anywhere on the page and he carries on from there. • Double-click and you startle him — he bolts for the far edge. • Right-click and he takes the hint and leaves. • Press Alt+Shift+9 to bring him back, or to hide him. (Ctrl+Shift+9 on a Mac. Rebind it at chrome://extensions/shortcuts — the popup shows the shortcut you actually have, so a key that has been taken by something else is visible rather than mysterious.) ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ■ IT CANNOT GET IN YOUR WAY. THAT IS THE ENGINEERING. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Most desktop pets are a novelty you uninstall in a week, and the reason is almost never the pet. It is the overlay eating a click on a checkout button, the CPU fan spinning up, or the thing sitting on top of a video. All three are designed out here. NEVER STEALS A CLICK. The overlay is click-through everywhere except the pet's own ninety-odd pixels. Every other click on the page reaches the page. You can sit him on top of a button and still press the button. BARELY USES THE CPU. There is no animation loop. CSS runs every frame; the script only decides what to do next and then sleeps. A pet walking all the way across your screen wakes the extension exactly twice. Nothing is measured from the page while he moves, so he never forces the browser to re-lay-out anything. GETS OUT OF THE WAY BY ITSELF. Switch tabs, go fullscreen on a video, or print a page and he stops completely — not "pauses the animation", stops. CANNOT BREAK THE PAGE, AND THE PAGE CANNOT BREAK HIM. He lives in a closed shadow root: the site's CSS cannot reach in, his cannot leak out, and page scripts cannot see his elements at all. RESPECTS "REDUCE MOTION". Turn on your system's reduce-motion setting and he stops travelling rather than teleporting about — the honest answer to "please move less" is to move less. TURN HIM OFF PER SITE. One switch in the popup, and he never appears on that site again. Pro is about the pair. BOTH PETS AT ONCE, AND THEY BEHAVE LIKE A COUPLE. Cocoa and Cloud on the page together, and they are aware of each other. They never stand inside one another. When one gets left behind at the far side of the window, the other goes and finds them. And once in a while, standing side by side, they have a moment: a kiss, a hug, a high five, or a slow dance. THEY NOTICE WHAT YOU ARE DOING. Start typing and a little notepad comes out — they settle down and work alongside you. Start a video and out come the 3D glasses and a bucket of popcorn, and every so often one of them gets up and dances at the screen. ELEVEN OUTFITS, INCLUDING FOUR THINGS TO RIDE. He does not know what site he is on beyond its address, which is only used for the per-site off switch. He does not see what you type — the typing reaction is triggered by the fact that a key went down, never by which key it was. Nothing is collected and nothing is transmitted. The only network request this extension can make is to check a Pro licence key, and only if you have entered one. WHY HE NEEDS PERMISSION FOR EVERY SITE: because he walks around on the page you are looking at, and there is no way to know in advance which pages those are.
