Clutio - AI Dictionary, Translator & Vocabulary Builder
Overview
Read news in another language? Right-click any word: meaning in context, examples, translation, pronunciation. Free vocab review.
Clutio is an AI dictionary extension for Chrome. Select a word on a web page, right-click, and see what it means in that exact sentence, with examples. Each word lookup is saved with its sentence for review, export and printable tests. No Clutio account is needed. How Clutio is different ✓ A dictionary lists every meaning and leaves you to pick one. ✓ A translator rewrites the whole sentence, so you can't see what one term is doing. ✓ Clutio reads the sentence around your selection and shows the meaning that fits it first, with other common meanings below. How it works 1. Select a word or short phrase by dragging over it or double-clicking it 2. Right-click and choose the Clutio menu item, "I don't know..." 3. A card opens next to your selection, and the lookup is saved with its sentence Shortcut: Alt+S (Mac: Ctrl+S) looks up and saves the selected text. Or click the owl button next to any selection. What each card shows ✓ The meaning in this sentence, at the top ✓ Other common meanings ✓ 2 or 3 example sentences, each also shown in your language ✓ Pronunciation with one click, using your browser's built-in voices Your word list builds itself ✓ Every lookup is saved with its original sentence. There is no save button. ✓ Open the list from the extension icon to search it or view details. ✓ Export CSV in settings. It opens in Excel or Google Sheets and can be imported into apps such as Anki. Review by typing the missing word ✓ Spaced repetition picks the entries that are due. ✓ You see your saved sentence with a blank where the word was, and you type it in. ✓ Right answers push the next review further away. Open the review tab with Alt+R (Mac: Ctrl+R). ✓ Streak days and an activity heatmap show how regularly you study. Saved words stand out as you read ✓ Terms you saved are highlighted on pages you read. You can turn this off in settings. ✓ Hover over one to see its saved meaning and a pronunciation button, with no new AI call. Printable study sheets and vocabulary tests ✓ Generate Study File makes an A4 PDF study sheet from your saved words. ✓ Generate Test File makes an A4 test PDF with an answer key. ✓ Part 1 gives a meaning and you write the word. Part 2 asks you to fill the blank in an example sentence. ✓ Recently saved entries show up more often. In effect, Generate Test File is a vocabulary quiz maker built from your own reading. Choose your AI engine ✓ Groq is the default, a service that lets you use AI for free. It runs the GPT-OSS 20B model. ✓ ChatGPT (OpenAI) and Claude (Anthropic) work with your own API key. That company bills you, and Clutio charges nothing. Meanings in your language The interface comes in 7 languages: English, Korean, Japanese, Chinese (Simplified), Spanish, French and German. Pick one in the Clutio popup, and meanings appear in that language. Example sentences stay in the original language, each with a version in yours. Where it works Use it on news sites, blogs, online articles and documentation pages, in Chrome or Chromium browsers such as Edge, Brave and Opera. It does not run in Firefox or Safari. Who it is for ✓ ESL learners and international students who read English every day ✓ Anyone preparing for IELTS, TOEFL, TOEIC or the GRE who wants to learn words from real articles ✓ Developers reading English docs and API references ✓ Readers who want to build their English vocabulary from what they already read Free setup Groq, the default engine, currently allows 1,000 requests a day and 30 a minute (Groq's policy, which may change). 1. Add Clutio to Chrome, and a setup guide opens 2. Sign up at console.groq.com (phone verification, no card) 3. Go to API Keys, click Create API Key and copy the key that starts with gsk_ (shown once) 4. Paste the key into the setup guide and keep it private Privacy ✓ No Clutio account or login, and no Clutio server ✓ Your word list, study history, settings and API key are stored only in this browser (IndexedDB) ✓ The selected word and its sentence (up to about 300 characters) are sent only when you look it up, straight from your browser to the AI service you chose ✓ The page address and title are not sent, and Clutio cannot see what you look up ✓ What that AI service does with the text follows its own policy Common questions Q. Can it translate English to Spanish? A. Yes, for words and short phrases you select. Set the interface to Spanish and meanings and example translations appear in Spanish. Q. Does it work as a dictionary popup on the page? A. Yes. Select text, then right-click, press Alt+S or click the owl button. The card opens on the same page. Q. Is Clutio free? A. Yes.
