ClipShelf
Overview
Web clipper and offline reader: save articles, links, images and screenshots, highlight and add notes. Private, no account.
ClipShelf is a web clipper and private library for what you find online. Save a clean copy of an article to read later, even offline, or grab a passage, a link, an image or a screenshot. Highlight the parts that matter and add your own notes. No account, nothing to sign in to, and nothing you collect is ever uploaded. SAVE IT YOUR WAY • Articles: clean and readable, without ads, menus or pop-ups. Headings, lists, tables, code and math stay intact, and so do the pictures when the site allows it. • Selected text: just the passage you chose, with its formatting and the address it came from. • Links: store just the address when you don't need the text. • Images: right-click a picture to keep the file itself, then copy or download it whenever you need it. • Screenshots: drag over part of a page, scrolling as you go to reach past the bottom of the screen, or capture the whole page at once. Text inside a screenshot is searchable. • Facebook and LinkedIn posts come out as the post, not the comment thread under it. It runs in your own browser, so it works on sites you're signed in to. Click the toolbar button, right-click, or use a shortcut: Alt+Shift+S for a quick save, Alt+Shift+4 for a screenshot. The side panel opens beside the page, picks up any text you select, and lets you choose a collection and tags as you go. READ WITHOUT DISTRACTIONS Choose the font, text size, line spacing, column width and theme (light, sepia or dark). Long pieces get a progress bar and, when they have headings, a table of contents; each one reopens where you left off. Code blocks have a Copy button. The reader never loads anything from the internet, so your text reads the same offline, on a plane or on a bad connection. MARK WHAT MATTERS • Select text in the reader and pick one of four colors, or press Alt+H. Click a colored passage to add a note, copy it as a quote that points back to that spot on the original page, or remove it. • Reading the live page instead? Right-click a selection and choose "Highlight in ClipShelf" to mark it in your offline version. Nothing is added to the website. • See them all in a list next to the article, or together on one page in the library. • Capture the page again later and they move to the new version. Any that no longer fit are set aside for you to reattach, never quietly deleted. • Keep a note on any clip, too. KNOW WHAT YOU HAVE Everything is marked Offline, Partial or Link only, and "Saved" appears only once it is actually stored. If a capture looks incomplete, you're told, and Fix capture lets you try another method or point at the part of the page you wanted. Grabbed something by mistake? Discard it, with Undo. Clipping the same page twice asks whether to update the earlier one or keep both. FIND IT AGAIN • Press Alt+Shift+Space (⌥⇧Space on a Mac) on any page and start typing: a search box opens right over it. • Full-text search covers titles, article text, tags, sites and everything you marked or wrote. • Sort clips into collections and tags. Select several and move them in one step, with Undo. • Stays quick with thousands of clips. SWITCHING FROM ANOTHER APP Import a Pocket, Instapaper or Raindrop.io export, a bookmarks file from any browser, a CSV of links, or your Chrome bookmarks and Reading List. Titles, tags, folders, original dates and Pocket highlights come along. Imports bring in addresses, not the text of each page; capture a page in full later and ClipShelf offers to add it to the same item. A preview shows what will be added before anything changes, and an import can be undone. YOURS, ON YOUR DEVICE • No account, no ClipShelf servers, no analytics, no ads. • No access to your websites at install. A page is read only after you click the toolbar button, use the right-click menu or press one of the shortcuts. • Export any clip as Markdown with your highlights and notes, and its images in a ZIP. • Back up your whole library as one ZIP file and restore it in another browser or on another computer. • Your library lives in this Chrome profile, and uninstalling the extension deletes it. Make a backup first. GOOD TO KNOW Chrome doesn't let extensions capture its own pages (chrome://), the Chrome Web Store or PDFs in Chrome's viewer. Some pages have nothing readable to extract; you're told so and can keep them as bookmarks instead. A few sites' images can be stored only after you allow access to that one site. Backups are not encrypted. There is no sync between devices and no mobile app.
