Clarte Word Explainer
Overview
Explain selected words in context using AI-powered definitions.
Clarte — instant word explanations, in the word's own language Clarte is a monolingual dictionary for the web. Select any word on a page and get a plain, neutral definition — written in that word's own language, not translated into yours. No jargon, no sentence-specific paraphrasing: the surrounding text is only used to pick the right sense of the word, and the definition never repeats the word itself. How it works 1. Select a word or short phrase and choose "Explain selected word" from the right-click menu. 2. Clarte detects the language of the selected word itself — not just the page's declared language — so a foreign word quoted in an English article is still explained correctly. 3. A popup shows a one-sentence definition, automatically written at a reading level matched to the word's own difficulty (CEFR A1–C2): common words get simple everyday phrasing, rarer words get more precise vocabulary. 4. Still too hard? Click "Simpler" to regenerate the definition one level down. Languages Explanations can be generated in any language the selected word is written in. The extension's own interface is available in 11 languages: English, French, Spanish, German, Portuguese, Italian, Russian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Arabic.
