uplang — Japanese on Netflix
Overview
Learn Japanese from Netflix subtitles — word cards, furigana, AI explanations, and Anki integration.
Turn every Netflix show into a Japanese lesson. uplang overlays interactive subtitles on Netflix. Every word is tokenized, annotated with furigana, color-coded by how well you know it, and one click away from an AI-generated grammar explanation or an Anki flashcard. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- WHAT YOU GET • Dual subtitles, free forever. Japanese plus any secondary subtitle language Netflix lists for the title (English, Spanish, Korean, Italian, German, and more). No account required for the dual-subtitle mode. • Correct word boundaries. Powered by Sudachi — Japan's gold-standard morphological analyzer. Multi-word expressions like 食べたくなかった and 関係ない are identified as single units, not split into nonsense pieces. • Tokenization for the whole episode in ~50 ms. By the time the first subtitle appears, every word card in the entire episode is already prepared. There is zero per-line delay. • Furigana, your way. Always on, on hover, only on words you don't know yet, or off. Font size and overlay offset are fully adjustable. • Familiarity highlighting. Known words in green, fragile words in amber, new words in your accent color — calibrated to your personal Anki vocabulary. • Word cards with dictionary data. Reading, part of speech, conjugation, alternative forms, glosses — from JMdict (the definitive open-source Japanese–English dictionary). • Selection breakdown. Highlight any span of Japanese text for a token-by-token breakdown with meanings and readings. • AI grammar explanations. Request a contextual explanation for a word or phrase; the AI sees the full subtitle line as context and explains the grammar in plain language. No generic translations. • One-click Anki flashcards. Send the word, reading, POS, glosses, and full sentence context (Japanese + your secondary subtitle line) straight into your Anki deck via the AnkiConnect add-on. Offline? The card is queued and sent when Anki is running again. • Vocabulary sync. Your Anki decks flow back into the extension to power familiarity highlighting — so the words you are actively studying are the ones highlighted on screen. • Playback controls built for study. Optional pause-on-hover freezes the video while you read a subtitle. Left / right arrow keys jump to the previous or next subtitle line instead of Netflix's default 10-second skip. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- HOW IT WORKS 1. Install the extension and open Netflix. 2. Dual subtitles appear automatically — pick any secondary language Netflix offers for the title. 3. Sign in (or start a 7-day free trial) to unlock the interactive tools: word cards, furigana, AI explanations, Anki integration, highlighting. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- PRICING • Dual subtitles: free forever, no account needed. • Pro (all interactive features): 6.99 USD per month, or 69 USD per year (~5.75 USD per month). Every paid plan starts with a 7-day free trial. Cancel in one click, keep Pro until the end of the billing period. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- REQUIREMENTS • A Netflix account (any plan). • For flashcard integration: Anki Desktop running locally with the AnkiConnect add-on (free, add-on code 2055492159). Optional. • For Pro: a uplang account (create one at uplang.io). ------------------------------------------------------------------------- PRIVACY We take privacy seriously.
