Chromium Cloud Sync
Overview
Encrypted Chromium browser sync through GitHub Gist.
Chromium Cloud Sync is a Manifest V3 browser extension for synchronizing Chromium browser state across devices through a selectable cloud provider, without depending on a browser vendor's built-in sync service. --- Core Features * Tabs & Windows Synchronization: Synchronize normal windows and HTTP(S) tabs, including titles, URLs, pinned state, active status, tab order, and group affiliations. * Tab Groups Support: Preserve stable group identities, titles, colors, collapsed states, and group memberships. * Bookmarks Management: Retain bookmark titles, URLs, folder hierarchy structures, sort order, and stable IDs. * Extension Inventory & Metadata: Track installed third-party extension IDs, names, versions, enabled states, installation types, and update information across devices. * Extension Recovery Center: Identify missing extensions on new devices and access direct recovery links to the Chrome Web Store, Edge Add-ons, and compatible stores. * Local CRX / ZIP Package Backup: Scan local profile directories to package extensions into ZIP archives, or directly upload existing CRX/ZIP files to a private backup destination. * Modular Storage Architecture: Bookmarks, tabs, and extensions are stored in separate module files, uploading only changed modules to minimize bandwidth and storage writes. * Local-First Three-Way Merge: Intelligently merge base snapshots, local changes, and remote state instead of blindly overwriting data. * Deletion Tombstones: Track deletion history so older offline devices do not accidentally revive deleted items upon syncing. * Explicit Conflict Resolution: Present unresolved field conflicts clearly for manual review rather than making silent, unexpected overwrites. * History & Rollback: Leverage provider-native revision history (or maintain a local index of up to 30 snapshots) and roll back safely by creating a new revision. * Bilingual UI & Theme Controls: English and Simplified Chinese interfaces with customizable appearance themes. --- Supported Cloud Providers The synchronization engine is decoupled from the storage layer, allowing you to choose the backend that fits your environment: 1. Google Drive * Authentication: Connects via browser-managed OAuth using the least-privilege drive.file scope (the extension can only access files it creates). * Highlights: No manual Client ID or Secret entry required for standard setups; revision history is backed natively by Google Drive file revisions. 2. GitHub Gist * Authentication: Authenticate with a personal GitHub Token to bind or create a private Gist. * Highlights: Leverages Git commit history natively for version tracking and historical rollbacks. 3. WebDAV * Authentication: Connect via custom WebDAV server URL, target directory, username, and password / app password. * Highlights: Maintains an automated history/index.json tracking up to 30 recent snapshots. --- Data Scope & Boundaries Included in regular sync: * Open windows and HTTP(S) tabs * Tab groups and group memberships * Bookmark hierarchy, order, and details * Third-party extension inventory and metadata Explicitly excluded from sync snapshots: * Browser passwords and autofill credentials * Third-party extension private storage, settings, and local data * Browser-level settings and system preferences --- Independent Extension Package Backup In addition to extension inventory metadata, package backup runs as an independent subsystem: * Independent Backend: Synchronize browser state through GitHub Gist while backing up extension packages to Google Drive or WebDAV without interference. * Automated Local Packaging: Point to your browser profile or unpacked extension folder to automatically identify, package into ZIP format, and upload. * Deterministic Integrity & Resumable Uploads: Uses SHA-256 checksums to prevent duplicate uploads; large files stream using resumable upload protocols. * Multi-Version & Residual Cleanup: Review and permanently remove unneeded backups or outdated versions for uninstalled extensions with a single click. --- Privacy & Security * Private Storage: Created GitHub Gists default to Private Gists; Google Drive files are isolated within an application-managed folder. * Credential Protection: Access tokens and sensitive keys are strictly scrubbed and rejected prior to uploading any data payload. * Encryption Notice: Sync payloads are stored as standard JSON in your private storage; ensure your personal tokens and cloud backend access credentials remain secure. --- Quick Start Guide 1. Open the extension popup after installation and navigate to Settings. 2. Choose and configure your preferred cloud provider (Google Drive, GitHub Gist, or WebDAV). 3. Click "Sync now" to perform your initial snapshot upload. 4. (Optional) Enable automatic background synchronization with intervals from 5 to 60 minutes (disabled by default).
