Chouette translates web pages and text privately, no cloud, no API keys, no data ever leaving your browser. Unlike traditional translation extensions that send every word to a remote server, Chouette runs a full AI translation model (Gemma) directly in your browser using WebGPU and WebAssembly. Your text stays on your device at all times. How It Works 1. Install the extension and download the translation model (~4 GB, one-time) 2. Visit any page in a foreign language — Chouette detects it and shows a translate bar 3. Click Translate — the page is translated in place, starting with visible content first 4. Toggle between the original and translated text anytime Privacy Chouette runs Google's Gemma model entirely on-device. No text, page content, telemetry, or personal information is ever collected or transmitted. See our privacy policy for details. Requirements • Chrome 113 or later • A WebGPU-capable device (most laptops and desktops from 2018+) • ~4 GB of storage for the model (one download, shared across profiles) To check WebGPU support, open chrome://gpu and confirm "WebGPU" shows "Hardware accelerated."
