China Satellite Align
Overview
Lines up Google Maps satellite photos with the roads and labels in mainland China.
THE PROBLEM China requires maps of the mainland to use GCJ-02, a deliberately offset coordinate system. Google Maps draws its roads and labels in GCJ-02 but its satellite photos at their true positions, so in satellite view they're about 300 - 600 m apart. This extension moves the photos onto the roads and labels. PRIVACY • No data is collected, stored or sent. The only saved setting is the on/off switch. • It downloads neighbouring photo tiles from Google's own tile servers, without cookies or a referrer. Switched off, it makes no network requests. • It only runs on Google Maps pages. LIMITATIONS • Mainland China only. Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan are left as they are, as they do not use GCJ-02. • Near borders, a small strip of photos can be off. It shrinks as you zoom in. • With photos aligned, coordinates Google shows (right-click menu, pins, address bar) are about 500 m off the photo, as on the regular map.
