Overview

Record a walkthrough of your web app (clicks, DOM, screenshots, network) for Checksum to turn into automated end-to-end tests.

If you've ever tried to hand off a test case to someone, you know how it usually goes: you record a screen video, talk through what you're doing, and then someone on the other end watches the whole thing back sometimes for hours trying to turn it into a real automated test. It's slow, it's tedious, and a lot gets lost along the way. Ž Checksum Capture exists to skip all of that. Instead of filming a video, you just turn it on and use your app the way you normally would. Behind the scenes it quietly records everything that actually matters for building a test: every click you make, the real structure of the page as it changes, a screenshot at each step, and the network calls happening underneath. When you're done, all of that goes straight to Checksum, which turns it into a maintainable end-to-end test. No narration, no editing, no one stuck watching a recording back.Ž –Ž Using it is about as simple as it sounds. Pin the extension, open the app you want to test, and click the icon in your toolbar. Give your test case a name, hit Start, and walk through the flow exactly like a real user would log in, click around, fill out the form, whatever the scenario is. A small red dot sits in the corner of the page so you always know it's recording; you can pause and pick back up whenever you need to, or hide the dot if it's in your way. When you hit Stop, the recording gets packaged up, and if your workspace is connected, a Checksum session is created and opened for you automatically so you can go straight to generating the test. Ž Recording is scoped to your app. Checksum Capture only records on the URLs your workspace has configured for the application you're testing (and their login pages) so it never captures unrelated sites you happen to have open. If you try to start on a page outside that list, it simply won't record there. –Ž What makes the recording useful is how much it captures without you having to think about it. It records a full, replayable version of the page using rrweb not just the parts you can see, but iframes too, including cross-origin and nested ones, which is usually where this kind of tool falls down. Every click gets its own screenshot so each step is anchored to something visual. Network traffic is captured both as lightweight metadata and as a full HAR file you can open in any standard tool. And if your flow opens new tabs an OAuth popup, a payment window, a link that opens in a new tab it follows those automatically and keeps track of the order things happened in, so the multi-tab journey stays intact. Tabs you open yourself for unrelated reasons are left alone and never recorded.Ž Ž We've tried to be careful with the sensitive parts, because a recording of someone using a real app is, by nature, sensitive. Passwords are masked before they ever make it into the recording. When you stop, the whole thing is scrubbed once and that same cleaned-up copy is what gets saved and uploaded, so we're not leaving authorization headers, cookies, or secret-looking values lying around. A copy of every recording is also saved straight to your Downloads folder, so you always have your own copy and stay in control of it. That said, the redaction is best-effort and heuristic, and screenshots capture whatever is on screen at each step, so it's worth treating those saved files as confidential and not, say, committing them to a repo. Ž A couple of notes, since this is still a beta. The recording reconstructs the page's DOM rather than capturing a pixel-perfect video, which means anything drawn on a canvas or in WebGL won't replay visually. And there are a handful of pages Chrome simply won't let any extension record its own internal pages, the Web Store, the built-in PDF viewer, view-source, and local files so if you try to start there, it'll just back out cleanly and tell you why. Ž Ž It's built for teams using Checksum to get their end-to-end tests written faster, without turning every test case into a half-day project. If that's you, give it a try and tell us what breaks.
