Overview

The stream's Twitch chat, auto-synced to its recent replay, even an edited one. For YouTube™. Free, no account, any streamer.

You're watching the replay of a stream on YouTube™, and part of the show is missing: the Twitch chat. ChatIsBack puts it back next to the video and plays it along, synced to the moment each message was written during the stream. HOW IT WORKS 1. Open the replay of a recent stream. 2. ChatIsBack finds the original channel on its own: from the channel link in the description, or from its built-in table of more than 3,500 channels. If it can't, click its icon and type the channel name. 3. It finds the stream and syncs the chat by comparing the images and sound of both videos. If it hesitates between several, it lets you pick. WHAT SETS IT APART - No account: nothing to create, nothing to connect. - No closed list of partner channels: any streamer, as long as the stream is still online. - No server: your browser fetches the chat straight from the source. Nobody in the middle, and nothing is sent to the extension's author. - Even on an edited video (cut intro, removed break, excerpt of a long stream): it syncs the chat section by section. - Free, no ads, no analytics. IT TELLS YOU WHEN IT ISN'T SURE A chat out of sync is worse than no chat. So the label at the top of the panel always shows where things stand. It says "Auto" only when the sync has been verified. Otherwise it says so, for example "Estimated", "Unverified" or "Unverified part". On a part it could not find in the stream, it says "Unrecognized part" and the chat goes quiet, rather than show messages from another moment. The extension icon follows the same rule: the green check mark means verified sync, and only that. Measured on 22 September 2026 on 58 videos (183.9 hours) whose original stream was already known, against a reference computed from the sound, independent of the extension: - the chat was right, within 5 seconds, 85.5% of the time; - it was out of sync 3.0% of the time, including 0.03% under the "Auto" label; - 10.1% of the time, it showed "Unrecognized part" and displayed nothing. IN THE PANEL - The channel's emotes, including those from 7TV, BetterTTV and FrankerFaceZ, and its badges. - The video time in front of every message. - A chat activity bar: click a peak to jump there. - A "Clips" tab: the moments viewers clipped during the stream, placed on the video. A button hides their titles, which can spoil what comes next. - A link to the original broadcast, at the same moment when the sync is known. - Theater mode and full screen: the chat sits next to the video. - Manual fix: move the chat forward or back, type where the stream was when the video starts, or pick another stream. Your setting is kept for that video. - "Share this moment": saves to your computer an image of the video with the latest chat messages, and copies the link to that instant. LIMITS, PLAINLY - The stream must still be online: Twitch only keeps broadcasts for 7, 14 or 60 days depending on the channel. For older videos there is no chat left to replay; once it has found the channel, ChatIsBack tells you so. - Heavily cut best-of videos are the hardest case: in the same measurement, the chat was right 69.0% of the time there. - For Chrome on a computer: not on phones, nor in the app. - On a video with no stream behind it, it stays hidden. If the title or channel announces a replay but it can't find the original channel, its icon shows a "?" and it may suggest channels: pick the right one or type its name. - Right after installing, reload the video tabs that were already open. - The interface is in English, or in French when Chrome is set to French. PRIVACY The extension has no account, no server, no analytics, no ads: nothing is sent to its author. On every video you open, it reads the page (title, description, channel, playback position) to tell whether it comes from a stream. It also keeps in memory a short buffer of the sound the player has already received (1.5 MB at most), used only to check the sync. While syncing, it looks at tiny images of the video. Nothing from your video is saved or sent, except the image you create yourself with "Share this moment". As soon as the page suggests the video comes from a stream (link to the channel, channel in its table, title or channel name saying so, video already recognised, shared link), or when you click its icon or type a name, your browser contacts directly: - Twitch, for the chat, the clips, the list of streams, as well as images and sound extracts, used only for syncing. It receives the channel name and, when it has to search for it, the name of the channel that published the video; - 7TV, BetterTTV and FrankerFaceZ, for emotes. They receive the channel ID; - YouTube™, for the video's thumbnails and, if needed, to re-read its page. As with any website, these services see your IP address. For each video, the extension keeps in your browser the stream it found, your sync, the chat activity with a few messages, and the clip titles. This data does not expire, and uninstalling the extension does not erase it: to erase everything, clear the youtube.com site data in Chrome's settings.
