Overview

Turn your ChatGPT history into a color-coded knowledge base with one click.

Chat Highlighter — Highlight, Organize, and Revisit Your AI Chats Chat Highlighter is a Chrome extension that lets you highlight important parts of AI conversations (like ChatGPT) using four colors, manage them through a sidebar, and jump back to each highlight anytime — even across different chats. Everything is stored locally in your browser, with no server or data collection. ✨ Key Features 1. 4 Highlight Colors Select any text and click one of four color swatches — yellow, green, blue, or pink — to instantly highlight it. 2. Smart Sidebar View all your highlights in a compact list. Click to jump directly to the original message. 3. Cross-Chat Navigation Each highlight includes a deep link (#gpthi=<id>), allowing you to move across chats or pages effortlessly. 4. Persistent Local Storage All highlights and notes are saved in your browser’s localStorage. No internet, no syncing — your data stays with you. 5. Memo & Tooltip Add notes to any highlight. Notes are autosaved and appear as tooltips when you hover over a highlighted sentence. 6. Clean Toggle Delete Selecting an already highlighted area removes it automatically — no overlapping or duplicated highlights. 7. Automatic Recovery Even if the page reloads or changes dynamically (SPA navigation), highlights reappear automatically in their original places. 💡 How It Works 1. Select text in your chat or web document. 2. Click a color swatch that appears near your selection. 3. The highlight is instantly applied and saved in your local cache. 4. Open the sidebar from the bottom-right floating button (FAB) to see all saved highlights. 5. Click any highlight or “Go” button in the sidebar to jump to its original location. 6. Add memos for each highlight — all saved automatically. 7. Delete highlights anytime using the Del button. 🧠 Use Cases 1. AI Learning & Research — Mark key insights, definitions, or examples for later review. 2. Work & Meetings — Capture critical decisions or ideas from chat-based discussions. 3. Study & Note-Taking — Highlight key facts, then use the sidebar to revisit everything at once. 4. Documentation Review — Keep track of important paragraphs while reading long technical content. 🔒 Privacy & Data 1. No servers, no tracking — Everything happens locally inside your browser. 2. LocalStorage only — Your highlights and notes never leave your device. 3. No permissions beyond active tab access — The extension only runs where you use it. 4. Offline support — Works even without an internet connection. 🧩 Troubleshooting 1. Toolbar not showing → Try selecting plain text, not inside input fields or editors. 2. Highlight not appearing → Large selections (over 20,000 characters) are restricted for stability. 3. Highlight lost after refresh → Check if browser storage was cleared manually. 4. Page layout changed → Anchors might not match if the site content was heavily modified. 5. Performance drop → Too many highlights on a single page can slow things down; delete old ones periodically.
