TubeMargin: Notes & Transcript for YouTube
Overview
One-click YouTube summaries on your own Claude or ChatGPT key. Ask questions, click through the transcript, keep Markdown notes.
Turn YouTube videos into notes you keep. TubeMargin adds a panel to YouTube's right-hand column, or below the player in theatre mode, never on top of it. Read the YouTube transcript, click any timestamp to jump there, and send it to your own ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini with a clean prompt. Then keep the result as Markdown for Obsidian or Notion. ONE-CLICK SUMMARY AND QUESTIONS, ON YOUR OWN KEY • Add your own Anthropic (Claude) or OpenAI (ChatGPT) API key once in settings. • With captions on, press Summarize to get a summary in the panel (or switch on automatic summaries in settings): a one-line TL;DR, then the talk section by section, in emoji bullet points with clickable timestamps. • The Ask tab answers questions about the video from its transcript, with timestamps you can click, and labels anything that is not from the video. • Your key stays in your browser. The transcript goes straight from your browser to the AI company you picked, under your own account, which bills you for what you use. It never passes through us. • A finished summary is kept in your browser, so reopening the video does not summarize it again. • No key? Everything else works as before, and you can still hand the transcript to your AI in one click. YOUR AI, YOUR NOTES, NOTHING ADDED • When you hand off to an AI site, we never add anything to your prompt. What you send is what you chose. • No analytics, no tracking, no sign-up for the free features. • Your notes live in your browser. We run no server that receives your videos, transcripts or keys. FREE, WITH NO DAILY LIMIT • YouTube transcript with clickable timestamps • One-click hand-off to ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini, in your own account • Four prompts: summary, faithful notes, study notes, key quotes • Copy or download as Markdown, .txt or .srt PRO, FOR PEOPLE WHO BUILD A LIBRARY • Frame screenshots placed in your notes at their timestamp • A searchable library of every video you save • Your own custom prompt templates • Bulk export of your notes as Markdown files with an index Monthly, yearly or one-time lifetime. Payments are handled by ExtensionPay and Stripe. BUILT FOR LONG TALKS Lectures, conference talks, podcasts and interviews. If a transcript is too long for the AI you pick, TubeMargin splits it into clearly numbered parts or warns you. It never silently cuts it. GOOD TO KNOW • Works on videos that have captions or a YouTube transcript. Videos without either are not supported yet, and TubeMargin tells you. Shorts and live streams are not supported yet. • You need your own account at the AI site you choose. The in-panel summary and Ask tab need your own API key from Anthropic or OpenAI, which is billed by them. SCREENSHOTS Screenshots use the video "Can I Use This? Copyright Basics and Working with Open Educational Resources (OER)" by the Centre for Teaching, Learning and Technology, University of British Columbia (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1z0ZqkfbUdQ), licensed CC BY (YouTube "Creative Commons Attribution license"). The video frames are shown inside the TubeMargin interface with captions and a frame added. TubeMargin is an independent tool, not affiliated with or endorsed by the video's creator.
