Cardwright — Highlight to Flashcards
Overview
A flashcard maker: highlight text on any page and turn it into study cards — review, send to Anki, or export. 100% local.
Cardwright is a flashcard maker that turns what you read into study cards. Highlight text on any web page, click the icon, and your selection is already in the editor — make the card, review it, send it to Anki, or export it. No account, and your cards stay on your device. HIGHLIGHT, THEN CARD — ONE EDITOR, NO MODES Select text on any page and open Cardwright: the sentence you highlighted appears in the editor as the front of the card. Type an answer and you have a question-and-answer card. Or click any words in the sentence — they turn into blanks and the card becomes fill-in-the-blank instead. There is no mode to pick and nothing to set up; the kind of card follows from what you did. It is the fastest honest way to make flashcards from any website while you read. OPTIONAL: A BUTTON RIGHT WHERE YOU READ If opening the popup for every capture is one click too many, switch on the selection button in the gear menu. A small "+ Add card" chip then appears next to whatever you highlight; click it and the text is saved and waiting the next time you open Cardwright. It is off until you turn it on — that is the moment Chrome asks for permission — and one click in the same menu turns it off and hands the permission back. Leave it off and Cardwright runs on no page at all. YOU STAY IN CONTROL — THIS IS NOT AN AI GENERATOR Cardwright never writes cards for you, and that is the point. You decide what is worth remembering; it removes the typing and the formatting. Auto-blanks is an optional local assist that suggests blanks for the numbers, capitalised terms and quoted phrases in a sentence — you keep the final say and can click any word to change it. What you end up with is a small set of cards you chose, not a machine-generated pile to sort through and second-guess. STUDY RIGHT IN THE POPUP Start a review and step through the deck: show the answer, then rate it Again or Good. You can walk back and forward through the session or jump straight to any card in it, and the marks stay on the card list afterwards — so when you reopen Cardwright you can see at a glance which cards you got wrong. It is a lightweight self-test between bigger study sessions, not a replacement for a full spaced-repetition app. SEND TO ANKI — OR EXPORT A FILE Two ways to reach Anki, your choice: • Send to Anki — with the Anki app open on your computer, push the whole deck into it in one click. Cards land in the right deck, tagged, with duplicates skipped. (Uses the free AnkiConnect add-on.) • Export a file — download one file per deck that imports into Anki with no field mapping, or a Quizlet-ready text that is also copied to your clipboard so you can paste it straight into Quizlet's importer. There is also a one-click export of every deck at once. Either way nothing passes through a server in between. ORGANIZE AND KEEP SAFE Sort cards into local decks, rename or delete them, and back everything up to a JSON file — cards, decks and review progress — so a reinstall or a new laptop never costs you your work. Restoring puts it all back. Light and dark theme included. PRIVATE BY DESIGN Your cards never leave your device. Out of the box Cardwright reads a page only at the moment you click its icon, and it has standing access to no website at all. Switch the selection button on and it also runs one small script on the pages you visit — only to draw that button and read the text you highlighted and clicked it for; still nothing is transmitted. The only connections Cardwright makes are ones you choose: to the Anki app on your own computer (127.0.0.1), and — if you buy Pro — to our licence server to check your key. That check sends the key plus the extension's ID and version; never your cards, the pages you read, or personal information. No analytics, no tracking, no advertising. THE FULL APP IS FREE — UNLOCK UNLIMITED ONCE Every feature is free up to 25 cards and 3 decks: capture, fill-in-the-blank, Auto-blanks, the built-in review, study stats, Send to Anki, file and Quizlet export, bulk export, backup and restore, and the dark theme. Cards you have already sent to Anki stop counting toward that limit. Reach it and Cardwright Pro removes it for good — unlimited cards and decks, a one-time $4.99 purchase, no subscription and no renewal. The limit only ever affects making new cards: everything you have already made stays reviewable, exportable and backed up. Nothing you created is locked away, ever. GOOD TO KNOW (HONEST LIMITS) • Chrome does not let any extension read its own pages, the Web Store or PDF files — there is nothing to capture there, though your decks and review still work • A very long selection is trimmed to its first 4,000 characters • The card list shows your 30 most recent cards; review, export, backup and Send to Anki always cover the whole deck • Decks live on the device and browser profile you made them on — there is no cloud sync; Backup and Restore are how you move them • Send to Anki needs the Anki desktop app running with the free AnkiConnect add-on; with Anki closed, export the file instead • A fill-in-the-blank card stores the sentence with its blanks, so it has no separate answer field Made for students and self-directed learners who build their own flashcards from dense reading — university courses, nursing, medicine, law. Language learners can use it the same way, making fill-in-the-blank cards from articles in the language they are studying. "Anki" and "Quizlet" are trademarks of their respective owners.
