Check a used car’s MOT record, mileage, red flags and Buy Score from its plate, or how the model holds up when a listing hides it.

Know the car before you go and see it. Open a used-car listing and click the CarBuyerCheck icon. If the page shows a UK registration, CarBuyerCheck checks it and shows the car’s Buy Score out of 100 from its DVSA MOT history, with the verdict, any red flags and the few things that matter most before you buy it, such as MOT failures, advisories that keep coming back or a mileage reading that goes down. One click opens the car’s report on carbuyercheck.uk. RED FLAGS FIRST Some problems no score should average away: an MOT that has failed or run out, a dangerous defect at the last test, an outstanding recall, a mileage reading that goes down. CarBuyerCheck shows them above the score, with what to do about each. FINANCE, STOLEN AND WRITE-OFF CHECKS These records aren’t in the public MOT record. The result links to the History check on the car’s report, which you can buy on carbuyercheck.uk. When a History check finds a problem, the report caps the Buy Score and says why: a car recorded as a Category N write-off can’t read “Very good”. Try the fictional sample cars AB19 CBB, EF20 CBB and GH18 CBB to see a clean history, a write-off and a “Stop”. NO REGISTRATION ON THE PAGE? Many listings, including AutoTrader’s, don’t show the plate. CarBuyerCheck reads the make, model, year and fuel type instead and shows what the MOT record says about cars like it: how much maintenance they need, how reliable the model is and how often it’s involved in collisions. It also says what still needs the registration, so you know what to ask the seller for. After your free checks without an account, sign in free with Apple or Google on carbuyercheck.uk to check as many cars as you like. The extension uses the same sign-in as the website. PRIVATE BY DESIGN • CarBuyerCheck reads a page only when you click its icon. It has no standing access to any website except its own, carbuyercheck.uk, which it sends checks to. • Only the registration, or the make, model, year and fuel type, is sent, and only to carbuyercheck.uk. The page’s content, its address and your browsing history are never sent. • Checks use your carbuyercheck.uk sign-in if you have one, so a signed-in check joins your account’s recent checks, as it does on the website. Your last five checks are also kept in your browser, and uninstalling removes them. • No analytics and no ads in the extension. WHAT IT ISN’T The Buy Score comes from public records: the car’s DVSA MOT history and MOT data for its model. It isn’t a mechanical inspection and it doesn’t value the car.
