Caption Saver for Google Meet captures the captions Google Meet already displays on screen during a call and turns them into a clean, downloadable transcript. Requires captions to be on This extension does not generate captions and does not listen to audio. It only reads the caption text that Meet itself renders when you turn on Meet's own "Turn on captions" (CC) button. If captions are off, there is nothing for the extension to capture. Turn on Meet's captions first, every call, before you expect a transcript. What it does - Watches the caption region Meet paints on screen and tracks each speaker's line as it grows. - Meet re-renders the same sentence many times while someone is talking; the extension waits until a line is finished and commits it once, so you get one clean line per utterance instead of dozens of duplicates. - Attributes each line to the speaker name Meet displays. - Shows a small "REC" indicator in the bottom-left of the Meet tab while it's capturing, and a live line count on the toolbar badge. - Lets you download the transcript as TXT, SRT, VTT, or JSON from the popup. - If you reload the Meet tab mid-call, the transcript captured so far is restored and capture resumes. What it does not do - It does not access your microphone or any audio. - It does not perform speech recognition or AI transcription of any kind. It only reads text that Meet has already put on the page. - It does not work on any site other than meet.google.com. - It cannot recover captions from before you turned CC on, and it cannot produce a transcript if you never turn captions on. Honest limitations - Very fast, rapid-fire sentences from the same speaker can occasionally merge into one line. - Google periodically changes the CSS class names Meet uses for captions. If that happens, capture can stop working until the extension's selectors are updated (documented in the project's README). There's a structural fallback based on speaker avatar images, but it's less reliable than the primary selectors. Privacy Everything stays on your machine. The transcript is stored only in your browser's local extension storage (chrome.storage.local), so a reload doesn't lose your progress. There is no server, no analytics, no telemetry, and no third-party service — the extension makes no network requests at all. Data leaves your device only when you personally click a download button, and it goes straight to a file on your own disk. The developer never sees, receives, or has access to any of your caption data, meeting content, or usage information. Click Clear in the popup to delete the current transcript at any time. Permissions, plainly - storage: keeps your in-progress transcript saved locally so a tab reload during a call doesn't lose it. - downloads: writes the TXT/SRT/VTT/JSON file to your computer when you click a download button. - Site access to meet.google.com only: the extension needs to read the caption text Meet displays on that page. It does not request access to any other site, and it does not request tabs, activeTab, or scripting permissions. A note on consent Recording or transcribing a meeting may require the consent of other participants depending on your location and applicable law. Make sure you have the necessary consent before capturing a call, and use this tool in compliance with the law that applies to you. This is an independent, community-built tool.
