Brevier adds live captions to any tab that plays audio — video calls, streams, lectures, podcasts — and processes everything on your own machine. Your audio is never uploaded, never recorded, and never sent to a server. Press Start, and a caption bar appears over the tab you are watching. Drag it anywhere, resize the text, and read along in real time. WHY BREVIER • On-device: captions are generated locally with WebAssembly and WebGPU, inside Chrome. • Private: no audio uploads, no accounts, no tracking. Everything works without signing in. • Works everywhere: any site you can watch or listen to, including fullscreen video players. • Caption bar your way: position, font size, number of lines, background opacity, and interim text — drag the handle to move it. LIVE CAPTIONS, ON-DEVICE ENGINES • Parakeet — fastest English; live text in tens of milliseconds on a GPU. • Parakeet TDT — 25 European languages including English (German, French, Spanish, Italian, Greek and more); fast, accurate, and about 400 MB. • Kotoba — Japanese-specific Whisper fine-tune; about a third of Whisper's size (~530 MB). • Moonshine — runs on your CPU (uses your GPU when available); English, Spanish, Arabic, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese, and Vietnamese in 44–305 MB models. • Whisper — widest coverage; 99 languages, including English. Auto (the default) picks the best engine for your machine and switches engines automatically if one cannot load. Models download once (roughly 44 MB to 1.5 GB depending on engine and model) and are cached for offline use. ON-DEVICE TRANSLATION Translate captions as they appear with the built-in Chrome translator — instant, runs on your CPU, free. Requires desktop Chrome 138 or newer. Show the original, the translation, or both together (bilingual captions). PRIVATE BY DESIGN • Audio is captured only from the tab you start captions on, and only while captions are running. • Speech, captions, and translations are processed in Chrome on your machine — nothing is transmitted. • The caption overlay is click-through: it never blocks buttons or links on the page. • The extension is open about its models: Moonshine models are MIT-licensed; license notices are linked from the popup. REQUIREMENTS • Desktop Chrome 116 or newer (Chrome 138 or newer for built-in Google Translate). • A GPU (WebGPU) is required for Parakeet, Parakeet TDT, Kotoba and Whisper. Moonshine runs on CPU-only machines. • The first run downloads the selected model once; afterward it works offline.
