BoilerSpace
Overview
A cleaner, faster Brightspace: dark mode, upcoming deadlines, and a redesigned grades view.
BoilerSpace makes Brightspace easier to live in. It is a styling and navigation layer over the LMS you already use. Nothing is uploaded, nothing is tracked, and no account is required. DARK MODE THAT ACTUALLY WORKS Brightspace is built from web components, and most "dark mode" extensions only reach the outer page, leaving white panels, white dropdowns, and unreadable menus. BoilerSpace redefines Brightspace's own theme variables and reaches inside its components, so dropdowns, dialogs, tables, the HTML editor, and the course cards all come with it. DEADLINES ACROSS EVERY COURSE A panel listing what is due across every course, pulled from your own calendar and grouped by how soon it is due. Three tabs keep three questions apart: Due is what is left, Overdue is everything late, Completed is what is done. A filter sets how far ahead Due looks, from today out to the whole term, and overdue work stays pinned above it, because late work is never "not due yet". Assignments show whether you have submitted. Quizzes show whether you have finished an attempt and how many you have left, and the Completed tab can narrow to the ones you could still retake. Deliberately writing something off is allowed too: any overdue item can be dismissed from Due, and it stays on the Overdue tab with a way to bring it back. One deadline is one row. Brightspace files a separate calendar entry for an item's open date, its due date and its closing date; the panel shows the due date, once. A GRADES VIEW YOU CAN READ The grades table becomes a ledger: hairline-ruled rows, figures aligned in columns, categories grouped, and totals worked out for you. Instructor feedback opens in place. An "ignore zeros" projection shows where you stand if unsubmitted items were not counted as zero. OPEN ITEMS WITHOUT LEAVING THE PAGE Every item in a module is normally a dead end: you leave, look at one thing, and come back. An expander on each row opens it in place instead. A PDF or slide deck fills the panel with the viewer alone, and an assignment shows its real submission screen, so you can upload and submit without navigating away. Only files and assignments open inline; anything else keeps its normal behaviour. Link items get a shortcut too. Following one used to cost a page you did not want plus the tab you did; now the "Link" line under the title takes you straight to the target. FEWER DEAD ENDS - "Show in module" links an assignment back to the module holding its instructions, saving the trip Brightspace otherwise makes you take through the Content tab. - Your submitted files are listed, and linked, on the submit page. - Content and Grades shortcuts on each course card, hidden on closed courses where those pages would just refuse. - Course PDFs open in a tab instead of downloading. BUILT TO BEHAVE Light mode and dark mode both get the same care. Every control has a visible focus ring, collapsed content stays out of the tab order, status is never carried by colour alone, and pages print as documents rather than as dark rectangles. PRIVACY BoilerSpace has no server. It talks only to your own institution's Brightspace, using the session you are already signed in with, and everything it remembers stays in your browser. No analytics, no telemetry, no third parties, no data sold or shared. Full policy: https://honzikchoutka.github.io/boilerspace-privacy/ WORKS AT YOUR SCHOOL Installed, it runs on brightspace.com. If your university hosts Brightspace on its own domain, open the extension and click "Enable on this site"; it asks for that one site, and only that site. BoilerSpace is an independent project.
