Overview

Command a deep-ocean research submarine through power limits, pressure, sonar, flooding, salvage, and crew fatigue.

Blackwater is a deep-ocean submarine command simulation about bringing a research vessel down into the abyss, completing a scientific expedition, and getting the crew home safely. The submarine is a connected machine rather than a single health bar. Propulsion, life support, sonar, pumps, floodlights, and the laboratory all draw from a shared power budget. Reactor output is finite, the battery can temporarily support overloaded demand, and a brownout can reduce the effectiveness of systems that are competing for insufficient power. Depth creates pressure. Pressure creates hull stress. Damage can reduce compartment integrity and allow flooding, which increases pumping demand and can force the player to seal sections of the vessel. Life support simultaneously tracks oxygen reserve, carbon dioxide, and temperature. Crew members accumulate fatigue while operating, surveying, salvaging, and repairing the submarine, so a technically survivable mission can still become difficult if the crew is exhausted at the wrong moment. Exploration happens through sonar rather than a fully revealed map. Passive contacts provide incomplete information; active sonar can reveal range and depth but costs power and has a cooldown. The player can track a contact, match its depth, approach closely enough to survey it, then decide whether a wreck or specimen is worth a salvage attempt. Different salvage methods trade time, power demand, hull risk, and equipment stress. Core systems include: • Submarine navigation, heading control, target depth, vertical motion, and seafloor clearance. • Pressure-based hull stress and depth-related operating risk. • Shared reactor and battery power with six independently adjustable system buses. • Oxygen, carbon dioxide, cabin temperature, and life-support demand. • Six vessel compartments with integrity, flooding, sealing, and pump interaction. • Crew fatigue and repair assignments. • Passive and active sonar, contact bearings, ranges, depths, and target tracking. • Scientific surveys, salvage decisions, cargo mass, science rewards, and credits. • Multiple deep-ocean contacts, wrecks, vents, terrain features, and expedition objectives. • Failure states for pressure damage, oxygen depletion, flooding, and severe systems loss. • Persistent upgrades and expedition progression. Blackwater is a fictional game simulation. It does not communicate with real vessels, maritime systems, sonar hardware, or navigation equipment and should not be used for real-world diving or marine operations.
