Overview
Show wudict dictionary definitions on hover, optionally behind a modifier key.
wuDict Hover shows dictionary definitions for the word under your mouse cursor. wuDict Hover is a client — it needs the free, open-source wuDict dictionary server running on your own machine (or another host on your local network): download a release for your OS or build from source from https://github.com/wuweidict/wudict — start the wudict server, point it at a folder with your local dictionaries, and the extension does the rest. WHAT IT DOES • Hover — point at a word, hold Alt (configurable, or no key at all), and a popup opens with one entry per dictionary, streamed in as each dictionary answers. • Selection — select text and use the right-click item "Look up … in wudict", or press Alt+Shift+W. • Toolbar — click the icon (or Alt+W) for a search box, the connection state, the hold-key setting, and a per-site pause switch. • Audio — click the speaker link in an entry to hear the pronunciation (if the dictionary provides it). SUPPORTED DICTIONARY FORMATS (via wuDict server github.com/wuweidict/wudict ) • MDict (.mdx) • StarDict (.ifo) • AARD2 (.slob) • ABBYY Lingvo (.dsl) • Babylon (.bgl). DOCUMENTATION Detailed features and instructions for both wuDict Hover extension and wuDict server: • https://wudict.legbehindneck.com/extension/ PRIVACY No data collection. No analytics, no tracking, no profiling, no ads, no third-party services, no account. The extension only connects to the wudict server you configured — by default http://127.0.0.1:6888, your own computer. No other connections are made. The extension does not read page content. It reads the word you point at, only while holding the modifier key (Alt by default, can be configured to no key). SETTINGS The wuDict server URL, on/off, hold key, hover delay, where search results open, right-click item on/off, per-site pause list, dictionaries per lookup (1–8), entries per dictionary (1–10), inflection fallback attempts, and an explicit dictionary selection. WHY IT ASKS FOR NOTHING AT INSTALL Every request — lookups, entry images, pronunciation audio — is made by the extension's own service worker, and wudict allows that origin by name. REQUIREMENTS Chrome 116 or newer, and a running wudict server (free, open source, Windows/macOS/Linux).
