Treco
Overview
See your AI usage and its estimated energy, CO2e and water footprint - entirely on your device. No conversations collected, ever.
Treco is a free, open-source browser extension that helps you understand your AI usage and provides clearly labeled estimates of the energy, CO₂e, and water associated with that usage. WHAT IT DOES Treco monitors supported AI services and estimates the tokens involved in your interactions. It then uses a documented, per-model calculation methodology to estimate associated energy use, CO₂e, and water consumption. The dashboard provides: • Today, week, month, and all-time usage summaries • Usage timelines • Provider and model breakdowns • Plain-language usage insights • Optional personal goals • JSON and CSV data export • Complete local data deletion controls PRIVACY BY ARCHITECTURE Treco is designed so your usage data stays on your device. • No account or sign-in • No backend or server • No network requests • No analytics or telemetry • No cloud storage or synchronization • No conversation storage or transmission To estimate token usage, Treco may temporarily process rendered text from supported AI webpages. This processing happens locally in your browser. The underlying conversation text is discarded after processing; only structured usage metadata and numerical estimates are stored locally. Treco requests only the permissions required for its functionality and restricts webpage access to supported AI services. You remain in control of your data. You can disable monitoring for individual services, export your usage history, or delete all locally stored data from Settings. HONEST ABOUT ESTIMATES Treco does not directly measure the electricity, CO₂e, or water consumed by an individual AI interaction. Environmental figures are estimates based on documented methodologies, provider-published information where available, and documented fallback assumptions where direct data is unavailable. Results can vary depending on the model, workload, infrastructure, electricity source, and calculation methodology. Treco therefore provides confidence levels and explains the methodology behind its estimates. OPEN SOURCE Treco is free and open source. The source code, security documentation, privacy policy, terms, and methodology are publicly available in the project repository.
