Undertone
Overview
Every scene has a feeling. Now you can see it. Undertone shows film music’s mood and pulse for Deaf and hard-of-hearing viewers.
Because the music tells the story too. Every scene has a feeling. Now you can see it. Film music tells you when a scene is dangerous, romantic, joyful or heartbreaking. Without it, a tense moment can look like nothing is happening at all. Undertone is made for Deaf and hard-of-hearing viewers, showing the mood and pulse of a film's soundtrack as it plays. EASY TO USE The first time, Chrome will ask you to let Undertone hear the tab. Choose Allow, and you won't be asked again. Click the Undertone icon while a film plays in Chrome, then press Start. A small green dot on the icon shows Undertone is listening. Press Stop in the same panel to turn it off. Works on streaming sites such as Netflix, Prime Video and YouTube, including in fullscreen. KEEP THE VIDEO'S VOLUME ON Undertone needs to hear the film, so keep the video's own volume turned on. You can mute your computer and Undertone will still work. If the video's volume is off, Undertone will let you know. COLOUR SHOWS THE MOOD Built-in AI recognises the mood of the music and colours the display to match: - Red: tense or scary - Orange: action - Yellow: happy or upbeat - Green: romantic or tender - Blue: sad FEEL EVERY BEAT Deep notes pulse through the display, so you can see the tension build as the music speeds up and grows louder. FOUR WAYS TO SEE THE MUSIC - Wave: a single line that rises and falls with the intensity and pulse - Ribbon: bass, mid and high notes flowing across the screen in layers - Caption Note: a music note at the bottom of the screen, the most minimal style - Pulse Line: a small heart-monitor line that spikes with every deep note Place any of them on the left, in the middle or on the right, and choose the size, visibility and how calmly they move. MUSIC, NOT NOISE Undertone focuses on the music and stays calm during dialogue, sound effects and silence. PRIVATE BY DESIGN Everything happens on your own computer. Undertone only listens after you press Start, and only to that tab. No audio is recorded, stored or sent anywhere, and there are no accounts, adverts or tracking. WHY YOU MIGHT SEE A WARNING WHEN YOU INSTALL If you've turned on Chrome's Enhanced Safe Browsing, you may see "Proceed with caution: this extension is not trusted by Enhanced Safe Browsing". Chrome shows this for extensions from developers who are new to the Chrome Web Store, and it's lifted once a developer has a few months' track record of following Google's policies. It reflects how new the developer account is, not anything found in Undertone. WE'D LOVE YOUR FEEDBACK Use the Give feedback link in the Undertone panel to tell us what works and what doesn't. Mood detection is an estimate made by AI, and your examples help us improve it.
