BetterYouTube – Slop Filter
Overview
Dims low-view videos and tiny channels in YouTube recommendations, and skips Shorts nobody liked.
It's not your attention span. It's the padding. More and more people decide they can't focus because a twenty-minute video felt endless. Often the problem isn't the viewer. It's a video stretched to hit a length: three minutes of substance, seventeen of intro, recap and "before we start". A game "review" that is just the author's own playthrough, cut up and narrated. A shocked face on the thumbnail and a title the video never delivers on. BetterYouTube dims those videos in your recommendations, so the ones worth your time stand out again. And on any video, it tells you what's inside before you press play. WHAT IT DOES • Video summaries: open the extension on a video and get a short verdict: what it really is, what's in it, and whether it's worth watching. Then ask follow-up questions about it. You choose who writes it: – Chrome's built-in AI (Gemini Nano), the default: on your computer, no account, no key, nothing sent anywhere. Chrome downloads its model once. It writes in English, Spanish, Japanese, German or French. Optionally it gets ready, or writes the summary, as soon as a video stays open for a few seconds. – A coding agent you already use (Claude Code, Codex or Gemini CLI), through a small open-source connector you install with one command. – Your own API key for OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini or OpenRouter, or your own server such as Ollama. • Few views: dims videos at or below a view count you choose (50K by default) on the home page, in the "Up next" column and, if you want, in search results. • Small channels: dims videos from channels under a subscriber count you choose (50K by default). Cards don't show that number, so the extension asks YouTube once per channel and remembers it for a week. Channels you subscribe to are never touched. • Shorts: removes Shorts shelves from the home page. In the Shorts player, a Short with fewer likes than you set (1K by default) is covered, muted and paused, so you scroll past it without hearing a second. • Dim or hide, pick the pages, set every threshold, pause everything with one switch. • A count of filtered videos on the toolbar icon. • English and Russian interface, light and dark theme following your system. AN HONEST CAVEAT Views are a rough signal: a great new video starts at zero too. That's why the default is to dim, not to hide, and hovering a dimmed video brings it back. PRIVACY No servers, no analytics, no accounts, no ads. The extension runs only on youtube.com. Your settings stay in your browser. Subscriber counts and transcripts come straight from YouTube. Summaries are written by Chrome's built-in AI inside your browser, or by the agent or AI service you choose, with your own account or key. Your keys stay in this browser.
