Overview

Open, copy, or fix selected links and anchor clicks from a tooltip.

Better Links is an open source Chrome extension under the MIT license. The source code is published at https://github.com/pericodes/better-links-chrome-extension People look for a Chrome extension to open a link in a new tab, copy a URL from selected text, or fix a broken link without leaving the page. Better Links does that for text you select, for a normal link, for an image, and for a video element. Hover and a tooltip appears. A double-click or a triple-click runs the action you chose. The right-click context menu does the same for a selection, a link, an image, or a video. Select an address and you can open the link in a new tab, open the link in a new tab and switch to it, open the link in a new window, or copy the URL. One selection can hold several addresses, split by lines, list items, or line breaks, so you can open multiple links at once: open all links in a new window, open them in the current window, or copy the corrected links. A single plain click on a normal link still follows it. Double-click and triple-click are the ones you assign on the options page. That is the case when a page prints an address as text instead of a clickable link. A product description on a shop page often pastes the maker's site, a manual, or a spare-part URL as plain text, sometimes broken, such as https//example.com or http:/example.com. Select that text to open it in a new tab or copy the link. With link fixing on, example.com/path becomes https://example.com/path. The same applies in a Chrome tab on Instagram when a post caption shows an http(s) address written out as text: select it and open or copy that URL. Better Links does not run inside the Instagram app, and it does not read a catalog or a feed. It only acts on the text you select, or on the link, image, or video under the pointer. On an image you can open the image in a new tab or in a new window, copy the image link, copy the image as a PNG, or save the image with a Save As dialog. On a video element you can open or copy its URL. On a YouTube or Vimeo page, if the player does not expose a direct file address, the extension uses the watch-page URL instead. The context menu can also search the current selection on Google. Turn on link fixing to repair URL text such as https//example.com, http:/example.com, htps://example.com, or a domain written without a protocol. On the options page you can reorder, disable, or write your own checkers. A checker is used only when it returns an http(s) URL. Settings and checkers can be exported and imported. The language follows the browser, or you can choose English or Spanish. Preferences stay in Chrome sync and are not sent to a developer server. Only http and https URLs are opened, copied, or downloaded. What you can do: * Open a link in a new tab, open it in a new tab and switch to it, or open it in a new window * Copy a URL from selected text or from a link * Read several addresses in one selection, split by lines, list items, or line breaks * Open all of those links in a new window, open them in the current window, or copy the corrected links * Leave a single click on a normal link as a normal visit; assign double-click and triple-click yourself * Show a tooltip on selected text, links, images, and videos * Open an image in a new tab or a new window, copy the image link, copy the image as a PNG, or save it with Save As * Open or copy the URL of a video element; on a YouTube or Vimeo page, use the watch-page URL when the player has no direct file address * Use the right-click context menu on a selection, a link, an image, or a video * Search the current selection on Google from that menu * Fix broken URL text such as https//example.com, http:/example.com, htps://example.com, or a domain with no protocol * Reorder, disable, or write your own checkers, and export or import them with the rest of the settings Better Links is open source, MIT license.
