Better Gmail adds an AI assistant to Gmail and Google Chat, with summaries, reply tools and a tidier chat list. • Email summaries — see what an email says and what it asks you to do. • Today — organize your inbox into Needs an answer, Deadlines, Worth reading and Can wait. • Replies in your own voice — learn your style from a small sample of sent emails, or choose Professional, Friendly, Short, Apologetic, Thankful, Confident or Very formal. Drafts go into Gmail’s reply box for you to review and send. • Quick replies — three suggested answers, plus tools to fix spelling, grammar and clarity. • Ask — search your mailbox and chats, with links back to the messages. • Clean up with a checklist — review proposed archiving, starring, labels, marking read or unsubscribing, then confirm the actions you want. • Google Chat inside Gmail — catch up on unread chats, with important messages first, short group summaries and mentions or questions highlighted. Background catch-up restores chats to unread. Conversations are read once, then updated with new messages. • A tidier chat list — search by name, filter unread or favourites, start a new chat and organize chats into Friends, School, Clubs or Apps. Your categories stay on your computer and use no AI. • Read receipts — request a receipt using Gmail’s own control when your school or work account supports it. • Alerts — optional hourly notifications for school email, Chat mentions and questions. • Inbox colours — customizable rules for school, deadlines, sports, clubs and newsletters. • Appearance — six themes, dark mode, compact inbox rows and a resizable panel. AI access is free for everyone until November 1, 2026. Better Gmail offers a free first month, then AI features are $3 a month through Stripe. Settings → Plan shows current access, usage and available subscription options. Monthly AI access includes an allowance of up to $1 in AI processing costs. You can cancel in Settings → Plan. Better Gmail never receives your card details. No API key is needed. Email and chat content used for AI features is sent through Better Gmail’s Cloudflare relay to Anthropic’s Claude. The relay tracks usage and subscription status without storing message content. Better Gmail never sends or deletes email, reports spam or sends Chat messages. You review and send every draft. Mailbox actions require your confirmation.
