Overview

Bilingual pages and dual subtitles. Sentences you truly read become spaced-repetition cards. Bring your own key.

Read the web in two languages at once. BelliedMonkey Translator keeps the original text and puts the translation right below it, so you never lose your place and never switch tabs. WHAT IT DOES • Bilingual pages — every paragraph keeps its original, with the translation underneath in a colour you choose. The translation inherits the original's font, size and alignment, so the page still looks like the page. • Dual subtitles for video — the full transcript is fetched up front and translated ahead of playback in a 60-second sliding window. You get matched whole sentences instead of word-by-word fragments, and no stutter even when the model is slow. • Dual subtitles for podcasts and audio — the same engine, with no video frame at all. BRING YOUR OWN KEY Translation requests go from your browser straight to the provider you choose. There is no server of ours in the middle — nothing to log, store or resell. Your API key stays in your browser and never leaves your device. Any OpenAI-compatible or Anthropic-compatible endpoint works, including one you host yourself. A no-key option is available if you would rather not configure anything. The extension itself is free and open source (GPL-3.0). You pay only what your own provider charges — nothing to us, no subscription, no account. WHERE IT WORKS Any standard web page works with no site-specific setup. YouTube, x.com, Substack and Spotify have had extra adaptation work. Any page carrying a WebVTT or SRT file, and any podcast publishing a Podcasting 2.0 transcript, gets subtitles automatically. HONEST LIMITS • Subtitles need a transcript that already exists. There is no speech recognition, so a video without captions gets a clear notice rather than a guess. • On x.com, captions burned into the video image cannot be read by any translator. If the player has a working CC button, we can translate it. Also available for Safari on iPhone, iPad and Mac. Source code: github.com/belliedmonkey/belliedmonkey-translator
