GeekTab — Personal Dashboard
Overview
A calm, private new tab: shortcuts, countdowns and widgets. No account, no tracking — everything stays on your device.
GeekTab replaces your new tab with a quiet, personal workbench: one clock, one search box, and everything else kept at the edges where it belongs. WHAT YOU GET • A real earth — a WebGL globe with NASA satellite imagery, live day/night terminator driven by the actual sun position, drifting clouds and city lights on the night side. Your location is derived from your time zone, never from GPS. • Five ambiences — a day/night Earth globe, Aurora, Warp Stars, Code Rain and a synthwave Digital World. Every one is rendered at 40 fps with pre-rendered layers, so it stays smooth on a laptop. • A workbench, not a wall of cards — a vertical app dock on the left, countdowns in a right-hand rail that never breaks when you add a 4th or 10th one, and a single focus panel in the middle. • Shortcuts that actually launch things — favicons are fetched automatically, you can drag to reorder, upload your own icon, or add your desktop apps (VS Code, Figma, Slack, Obsidian…) through their URL schemes. • Countdowns you can read — past and future dates, yearly repeats, emoji or uploaded icon, six colour presets. Click any row to edit it in place. • Programmable when you want it — write CSS that applies instantly, or JavaScript that runs in an isolated frame and returns HTML. Your code, your dashboard. • Ctrl+K command palette — jump to any shortcut, open settings, switch theme or wallpaper without the mouse. • A real scripting API — scripts read your countdowns, keep their own local storage and act on click (open / copy / rerun). • Light, dark and glass — a paper-blue light theme, a deep glass dark theme, and automatic switching to dark glass whenever an ambience is on. WHAT IT DOES NOT DO • No account, no sign-up, no cloud sync server. • No analytics, no tracking pixels, no ad networks. • No remote code. Nothing is fetched from our servers because there are none. • Your shortcuts, countdowns, wallpapers and custom code stay in chrome.storage.local on your device. Uninstalling the extension deletes everything. PERMISSIONS, IN PLAIN WORDS • storage — saves your dashboard locally. • favicon — shows the icon of the sites you add. • bookmarks (optional) — asked only when you click "Import bookmarks". • geolocation (optional) — asked only when you click "Use my location", to place the globe on your city. Coordinates are stored locally and never uploaded; the time zone is used if you decline. • Site access (optional) — asked only when you add a URL or click "Refresh icons", used to read that page's title and icon. Decline it and everything still works: tiles fall back to their first letter and pasted URLs show the domain only. Built with vanilla HTML/CSS/JS. No frameworks, no dependencies, no build step.
