Overview

Automatically mute newly opened tabs so unexpected autoplay audio stays silent.

Auto Mute New Tabs Tired of autoplay videos or advertisements blasting through your speakers when opening new tabs? Unlike Chrome's built-in mute controls, Auto Mute New Tabs automatically mutes new tabs the moment they are created. Visit the tab first, check the media player, adjust the volume if needed, and then unmute it when you're ready. You stay in control of when audio starts playing. It's perfect if you: * Open multiple videos or streams at once * Browse news sites with autoplay media * Research across many tabs * Frequently switch between speakers, headphones or different devices * Prefer to decide when a tab is allowed to make sound How it works 1. Enable Auto-Mute. 2. Open tabs as you normally would. 3. Every new tab starts muted. 4. Switch between tabs while keeping the extension's side panel open. 5. Unmute each tab whenever you're ready to listen. The persistent side panel stays available while you browse, making audio controls quick and convenient. Features * 🔇 Automatically mute every newly opened tab * 🎛️ Mute or unmute the current tab from the side panel * ✅ See whether Auto-Mute is currently enabled * 📌 See whether the current tab was muted by the extension * 🔄 Release all extension-muted tabs by disabling Auto-Mute * ⌨️ Keyboard shortcuts: * Alt + Shift + M — Toggle Auto-Mute * Alt + Shift + U — Unmute the current tab * ⚙️ Customize shortcuts through Chrome's extension shortcut settings * 🌙 Supports both light and dark themes Privacy First Your browsing activity stays private. Auto Mute New Tabs: * Does not read page URLs * Does not read page titles * Does not read page content * Does not inject scripts into websites * Does not access browsing history * Does not collect analytics * Does not track users * Does not require an account * Does not communicate with a backend server The extension only uses: * Chrome's tab mute controls * Local browser storage for your preferences (such as Auto-Mute state, theme and language) * Chrome's Side Panel API to provide quick access to controls Your data never leaves your browser. Chrome Audio Behavior Chrome treats extension-controlled tab muting separately from its built-in page and site sound controls. Because of this, a tab muted by Auto Mute New Tabs must also be unmuted through the extension, either from the side panel or by using the keyboard shortcut. Chrome's own tab context menu cannot remove an extension-applied mute. Chrome also does not provide extensions with an API to fully restore its internal page-level mute state for an already opened tab. If you need to return completely to Chrome's native mute behavior, simply close the affected tab and reopen it while Auto-Mute is disabled. This extension never changes Chrome's site-wide sound permissions.
