Overview
Analyze news using key journalism standards, including information-focused headlines, neutral language and balanced sourcing.
Augmented Media Literacy builds your media literacy as you read the news. Open it on a news article and it measures the article against practices of good journalism, the ones that trust you with clear information, minimal emotional influence and multiple points of view, and shows you the data. It analyzes the article and brings forward what is easy to miss, so you notice these signals in the article in front of you and, over time, recognize them on your own in everything you read. We don't tell you what to think. We help you see through media, and decide for yourself. FOUR WAYS TO SEE THROUGH MEDIA • Clickbait and headlines: the headline checked against a seven-category clickbait taxonomy, with the reasons for each finding, so you can weigh how the headline presents the story. • Emotional language: how much of the article uses subjective or emotional wording, with those words and phrases highlighted in the article itself so you can see them in context as you read. • Sources and viewpoints: every person and organization quoted, how much of the article each one gets, and which viewpoints are represented. A share-of-voice chart shows how the article's space is divided among its sources. • Consensus (coming soon): for major news events, the article is compared with hundreds of other reports on the same event, so you can see which claims are widely reported and which appear in only one place. The panel also includes a starter guide that explains each practice and why it matters. HOW IT WORKS 1. Open a news article. 2. Click the toolbar icon and choose "Analyze this page", or right-click the page and choose "Analyze with Augmented Media Literacy". 3. Press "Analyze this article" in the panel to run the analysis. Results appear in the panel, usually in 20 seconds or less. The extension first confirms the page is a news article, so your analyses go to stories rather than home pages or section fronts. YOUR PRIVACY, BY DESIGN • Access only when you ask. The extension reads a page when you click to analyze it. To have the panel ready on a favorite news site, choose "Always show on" followed by the site's name in the popup, one site at a time, and remove it whenever you like. • You decide when an analysis runs. It starts only when you press "Analyze this article" in the panel. • Your saved history lives in your browser. Every article you analyze is saved there so you can reopen its report later at no cost, and you can delete it from the Saved History page at any time. To run an analysis, the article's address, headline and text are sent to our server and stored there, as our privacy policy explains. WHAT YOU NEED • A Google account to sign in. • A subscription. Each analysis costs 43¢ from a prepaid balance you top up on your account page, and reopening an article you have already analyzed is free. Like any AI, it can make mistakes, so use the report as a guide to your own reading.
