Overview

Hide accounts on your blocklist across YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, X and TikTok.

Social Media Blocklist Extension This project is a browser extension designed to make social media safer and better by hiding or blurring content from accounts that are known for bad or unwanted content. The extension supports major social media platforms such as Facebook, YouTube, X, Instagram, and TikTok. The main idea is simple: there is a central blocklist of accounts that are considered to be sources of bad content. This list is managed by an administrator. The browser extension connects to the central system and synchronizes with the latest version of the blocklist. When a user browses one of the supported social networks, the extension checks the accounts that appear on the page against the blocklist. If an account is present on the list, the extension hides or blurs its content. Central Blocklist The blocklist is managed by an administrator. The administrator can add or remove accounts from the list and keep the list up to date. The blocklist can contain accounts from different supported platforms, such as: * Facebook accounts or pages * YouTube channels * X accounts * Instagram accounts * TikTok accounts The extension periodically synchronizes with the central blocklist so that changes made by the administrator are automatically available to the extension. Content Filtering When the extension detects content belonging to a blocked account, it applies the configured filtering behavior. Depending on the implementation, the content can be: * Hidden, so the user does not see it. * Blurred, so the user can identify that content is present without seeing it normally. The filtering is performed directly in the user's browser while they are using the supported social media websites. Purpose The purpose of this extension is to reduce users' exposure to accounts that are known for producing or sharing bad content. Instead of requiring every user to manually identify and block these accounts, the administrator maintains a shared blocklist that can be synchronized with all installations of the extension. This creates a centralized way to maintain and distribute a list of accounts that should be filtered across multiple social media platforms. Main Components The project consists of two main parts: 1. Administration system The administration system is responsible for managing the central blocklist. The administrator can update the list of blocked accounts. 2. Browser extension The browser extension runs on supported social media websites, retrieves the latest blocklist, detects blocked accounts, and hides or blurs their content. Overall Goal The goal of the project is to provide a simple filtering layer for social media that helps reduce exposure to known bad content. By maintaining one centralized blocklist and synchronizing it with the browser extension, the project makes it possible to apply the same filtering rules across Facebook, YouTube, X, Instagram, and TikTok. The overall objective is to make social media safer, cleaner, and better for everyone.
