Live Dual Subtitles with Auto-Translation and Pinyin

Adds Pinyin + a translated 2nd subtitle line to Chinese videos. Reads the site subtitles — or the ones printed on the video.

A video usually gives you ONE subtitle line — in one language, with no pronunciation help. Live Dual Subtitles turns that into a study view: the original line, Pinyin stacked under every Chinese character, and a second line translated into your language, side by side. Tap any word for its meaning. Because one line of Chinese doesn't teach you much. This adds the two things a learner actually needs — Pinyin under each character, and a translation in your own language on a second line — plus a tap-a-word dictionary, all at the same time. You read, hear and understand in one pass instead of pausing to look words up. THREE WAYS TO CAPTION 1) FREE — the video's own subtitles (no key, no cost) Reads the subtitles the video already has and rebuilds them as a learning view: original + Pinyin + your translation, with the tap-a-word dictionary. Works on YouTube, Netflix, and any site with real subtitle tracks — detected automatically, nothing to set up per site. On YouTube, turn on Karaoke and the word being spoken is highlighted as you hear it. The original subtitle and the Pinyin never leave your device; the translated line comes from YouTube's own translation on YouTube, or Google Translate (subtitle text only, no audio) elsewhere. 2) FREE — subtitles printed into the picture (no key, no cost) Many Chinese videos — dramas, vlogs, Shorts — have no subtitle file at all: the words are burned into the image. This reads them with OCR that runs entirely ON YOUR OWN COMPUTER, then adds the same Pinyin, translation and dictionary. No account, no key, no cost, and no video frame ever leaves your device. (Takes ~15–30 seconds to start, then runs live.) 3) ANYTHING WITH SOUND — built from the audio (optional, your own Soniox key) Including YouTube videos that have NO captions, and any other website. The extension listens to the tab's audio and creates the captions itself, auto-detecting the spoken language (60+) and translating live — so it works even where no subtitles exist at all. This part runs on your own Soniox API key: pay-as-you-go, currently about $0.12/hour. You pay Soniox directly; there's no middleman and no extra account to create. That includes LIVE MEETINGS: open Zoom, Google Meet, or Microsoft Teams in a browser tab and it captions and translates the meeting as it happens — the voices you hear, i.e. the other participants. No bot joins the call and nothing is added to the meeting; it simply listens to the tab. (Works with the meeting running in the browser, not the desktop apps.) Open a Chinese video — a YouTube video or Short, a Netflix title with a subtitle track turned on, or any site with subtitles. Subtitles printed into the picture work too. 2. Click the toolbar icon, or press Alt+Shift+S. The original line, Pinyin and your translated line appear right away (a video whose subtitles are printed into the picture takes ~15–30 seconds to start). 3. Everything else is on the caption window itself: pause and resume, choose which lines to show, switch Karaoke on, swap between the side panel and the on-video overlay, minimise it to the edge strip, or × to close. 4. Tap any word in a Chinese line to see its pinyin and meaning. Only the tab you're watching captions at a time. Switch tabs and that tab pauses and keeps its place — switch back and it picks up again by itself. WHEN THERE'S NO SUBTITLE TRACK (optional) For a video without subtitles, a live meeting in a browser tab, or any other website: open Settings (⚙ on the caption window), switch the caption source to Soniox and paste a Soniox key — the built-in Guide has a link and the steps. After that, anything with sound can be captioned. Check your usage and balance in the Soniox console anytime. To save credits, the connection pauses itself during silence and reconnects when sound returns. PRIVACY The extension runs no server, has no analytics, and collects nothing. In free mode the original subtitle comes from the site itself, and the Pinyin and dictionary run entirely on your device. Reading subtitles printed into the picture also happens entirely on your device — the video frames are examined in your own browser and are never uploaded anywhere. The optional translated line sends only the subtitle text (never audio, never images): on YouTube it uses YouTube's own translation, and on Netflix and other sites it uses Google Translate. Turn the translation off and no text leaves your device. Only if you choose Soniox mode does the tab's audio go to Soniox, using your own key, which is stored only in your browser.
