AI legal research assistant: chat with cases, generate briefs, compare decisions, and build arguments with paragraph-level citations
Alexii is an AI-powered legal research assistant for CanLII. Open it as a side panel while reading any case on canlii.org and get instant, citation-backed analysis. FEATURES: Chat: Ask questions about the case you're reading. Every answer includes clickable citation badges that jump to the exact source paragraph on the page. Case Brief : Generate a structured brief (Facts, Issues, Reasoning, Holding) with one click and download it as a formatted Word document (.docx). Passage Lens: Classify every paragraph by its role in the judgment (Fact, Issue, Reasoning, Holding, Obiter, Citation) with a color-coded overlay on the page. Counsel's Notebook: A cross-case research journal. Save passages from multiple cases, organize with tags, and use AI to synthesize connections across entries. Argument Builder: Build structured issue trees, collect passages as evidence, and use AI to draft persuasive argument paragraphs backed by the case text. Compare Cases: Paste a second CanLII URL to generate a detailed comparison of facts, issues, reasoning, and holdings between two decisions. Similar Cases: Discover related decisions automatically. Gist: Select any text on the page for an instant plain-language summary. Also available via right-click. Bookmarks: Save any AI response for later reference. SETUP: Bring your own API key (Anthropic or OpenAI). Your key is stored locally and never shared.
