)Overview
Summarize with your own AI key or local Ollama. Save for later w/ reminders, highlight text, Kindle export. Open source, no login.
AI Summary Helper is an open-source Chrome extension that summarizes web pages and PDFs using your own API key (OpenAI, Gemini, Mistral, DeepSeek) or a fully local model via Ollama — no data sent anywhere you didn't choose. It also turns browser clutter into an offline, searchable knowledge hub: save articles for later with timed reminders, highlight key passages, send tailored briefings to your Kindle, and explore your reading history as a visual knowledge graph. 🔑 Bring Your Own Key, or Go Fully Local Connect OpenAI, Gemini, Mistral, or DeepSeek with your own API key — or skip the cloud entirely and run a local model through Ollama, including a self-hosted or custom Ollama endpoint, so page content never leaves your machine. Prefer zero setup? The optional "byphil Cloud" tier skips API keys entirely with a quick free sign-in. BYOK and local Ollama need no account at all — the full source is open on GitHub. 🚀 Key Features 🧠 AI-Generated Summaries — Tailored to your preferences, powered by whichever provider you choose — byphil Cloud (sign in, no key needed) or direct API access. 📄 PDF Summaries — Summarize PDFs the same way you summarize any page: papers, reports, reading-list PDFs opened in a tab, or PDFs embedded in an online reader. No copy-pasting into a separate tool first. 🔖 Save for Later & Auto-Close Tabs — Clear your tabs without losing your train of thought. Save an article with a review timeframe (Tomorrow, Weekend, This Week, Research Session) and a note, then let the tab close automatically — a Chrome notification brings you back exactly when you asked to be. ⚡ RSVP Speed-Reading Overlay — Read streaming summaries at high speed while the AI generates them, with adjustable speeds and auto-close when finished. 📚 Send to Kindle — Send AI summaries and formatted articles to your Kindle device. 3 sends free, then unlocked with a Pro license. 📲 Offline Sharing — Push formatted EPUBs/PDFs to your iPhone/iPad via your OS share sheet (AirDrop, Messages, and more, depending on platform), or beam them to KOReader and other devices over Wi-Fi via the built-in LocalSend client. 🖊️ Smart Text Highlighting & AI Ghost Highlights — Highlight key passages in yellow (persists across reloads); AI ghost highlights automatically surface top quotes in light blue. 🕸️ Knowledge Graph Visualization — Explore your reading history as an interactive graph — see recurring topics and connections across everything you've archived. 📊 Reading Analytics — Track reading streaks, a 30-day activity chart, top keyword clusters, and a word cloud of what you've been reading. 💬 Chat-Style Summary Feed — Summaries saved locally in a scrollable chat feed — click any bubble to revisit the full article. 🔔 Timed Reminders & Notifications — Scheduled Chrome alarms bring you back to saved articles with your original note, right when you asked. 🖱️ Expanded Context Menus — Right-click anywhere to highlight text, trigger a summary, or run "Summarize & Close Tab". 🛠️ Customizable Prompts & Presets — Configure the base prompt, pick your summary length, or ask follow-up questions. 🌐 Summarize in your language — 🇪🇸 🇩🇪 🇫🇷 🇮🇹 🇵🇹 🇳🇱 🇷🇺 🇺🇦 🇵🇱 🇸🇪 🇩🇰 🇯🇵 🇨🇳 🇰🇷 🇮🇳 🇹🇭 🇮🇩 🇦🇪 🇹🇷 🇧🇬 🇷🇴 ❓ How is this different from other AI summarizer extensions? Most "AI summary" extensions lock you into one provider, require sign-in, route your content through their servers, and charge a flat subscription no matter how little you use it. AI Summary Helper works the other way: bring your own key or run entirely offline with Ollama — no account needed for either path — and the source is open for anyone to audit. Our own byphil Cloud tier is there if you want zero setup, and it only needs a quick free sign-in, not a subscription. If you want an AI tool you can fully own and inspect, this is built for that. 🛠️ How It Works Activate: Press CMD/CTRL + SHIFT + S, right-click any page or PDF, or open your Chrome Side Panel. Choose: Summarize & send offline (Kindle, share sheet, LocalSend), Summarize & close tab (pick a timeframe, add a note, speed-read while it streams, let the tab auto-close), or just highlight text as you read. Generate: Hit "Fetch Summary" and watch it stream live into your chat feed. Review: Read it, export/print it, explore its connections in your History Graph, search your archive, or jump back when your timed reminder fires. 💡 Why AI Summary Helper? Built to make AI-summarized, personalized reading actually portable — an interconnected knowledge graph of what you've read, a quick overview for printing, a PDF for later, or content pushed straight to your e-reader (Kindle, Apple Books, KOReader). Includes local Backup & Restore for your full configuration and history, and works alongside third-party tools like Reabble's Send to Kindle if you already use one.
