AI Summary Helper is a free, open-source Chrome extension that summarizes any web page, PDF or YouTube video in your language, with your own AI key (OpenAI, Gemini, Mistral, DeepSeek) or a fully local model through Ollama. It turns what you read into a private, searchable library with highlights, follow-up questions, a knowledge graph, reading analytics, an RSS reader and Send to Kindle. You pay the provider per request, usually a few cents a month, instead of a flat subscription. - Fully local with Ollama: run Gemma, Llama, Qwen or any other Ollama model on your own computer, or point AI Summary Helper at a self-hosted Ollama endpoint on your network. No API key, no cost per request, and page content never leaves your machine. - byphil Cloud (optional): no key and no setup. Yes. The extension is free and open source. With your own API key you pay your provider directly, usually a few cents a month. With Ollama it costs nothing. byphil Cloud includes a small free daily allowance; Pro removes the limits. Can I summarize web pages with a local AI model? Yes. Install Ollama, pull a model such as Gemma or Llama, and select Ollama in AI Summary Helper. Summaries, follow-up questions and feed recaps then run entirely on your computer, also with a self-hosted Ollama server on your network. Which AI providers work with my own API key? OpenAI, Google Gemini, Mistral AI and DeepSeek. Ollama covers local and self-hosted models. Does it work with PDFs and YouTube? Yes. PDFs opened in Chrome, including local files, and YouTube videos with captions can be summarized like any page. Can it summarize an English article in another language? Yes. Choose any of 41 summary languages; the source can be in a different language. How do I send web articles to my Kindle? Sign in to byphil, add kindle@byphil.eu as an approved sender in your Amazon account, enter your Kindle email in Settings → Send, and use Send → Kindle. Three sends are free; Pro makes it unlimited. Is my data private? Your library is stored locally in your browser. Page text goes only to the AI provider you picked, or nowhere with Ollama. The extension contains no tracking SDK, and the code is open for review. How is this different from other AI summarizer extensions? Most summarizers lock you into one provider, require an account and route everything through their servers on a monthly subscription.
