Overview

Translate, explain, or rewrite text in a browser side panel using your own AI provider key (BYOK).

AI Side Translator helps you translate and understand text directly in your browser using the AI provider and API key you configure (bring your own key — BYOK). Translate text you type, select, or view; explain technical errors and messages; rewrite complex text more clearly; or translate supported YouTube captions — all from Chrome’s side panel. FEATURES • Translate selected text from webpages. • Translate visible page content. • Read bilingually with the original text and translation shown together. • Replace page text with the translated version. • Restore the original page at any time. • Technical Explain mode for errors and technical messages. • Rewrite Clearly mode for simplifying complex text. • Optional hover translation after selecting text. • Optional auto-translation as new page content appears. • Optional page context for improved translation accuracy. • Optional live YouTube subtitle translation on supported watch pages. • Choose Bilingual or Translation-only subtitle display for YouTube captions. • Custom glossary, do-not-translate terms, and translation rules. • Session translation history for up to 30 recent side-panel translations. • Settings export and import. • Layout-safe translation for modern card and feed pages. • Skips interface fragments such as buttons, navigation, scores, stock tickers, weather values, and advertising labels. YOUTUBE SUBTITLE TRANSLATION Subtitle Translation is optional and off by default. When enabled on a supported YouTube watch page, AI Side Translator reads the live caption text displayed by YouTube and sends it to your configured AI provider for translation. You can choose: • Bilingual — show the original caption and translation together. • Translation only — hide the source caption and show the translated caption. Subtitle translations are not saved to Translation History and are not persisted by the extension. The extension does not capture audio, record video, analyze video frames, use OCR, use speech-to-text, or extract burned-in subtitles or hidden transcripts. PRIVACY AND DATA USE On first use, the side panel displays a “Privacy and data use” disclosure. The extension does not process translation data or contact an AI provider until you click “Agree and continue.” You can withdraw consent later by using “Reset privacy consent” in Settings. Depending on the feature you use, the extension may process: • Text you type into the side panel. • Text you select on webpages. • Visible page text you choose to translate. • Newly loaded page text when optional auto-translation is enabled. • Live YouTube caption text when Subtitle Translation is enabled. If optional page context is enabled, the active page title, hostname, and a bounded snippet of nearby text may be included with the translation request. Your configured glossary, do-not-translate terms, and translation rules may also be included when applicable to the requested translation. Translation data is sent directly from your browser to the AI provider you configure, authenticated with your own API key. Provider requests containing credentials use HTTPS only. There is no developer translation server. The developer does not receive your text, API keys, translations, subtitle data, or browsing activity. Processing by the AI provider you select is governed by that provider’s own privacy policy and terms. API keys are stored per provider in browser session storage for the current browser session. You re-enter them after the browser closes. Keys are not synchronized and are excluded from settings exports by default. A key can be included only through an explicit opt-in export with a warning. Side-panel Translation History stores up to 30 recent items for the current browser session only. It clears when the browser session ends and can also be deleted per item or cleared completely. YouTube subtitle translations are not added to History. There is no telemetry, analytics, developer backend, account, login, database, advertising tracking, or remotely hosted executable code. The extension does not log translated text, API keys, subtitle text, or browsing activity. Plain-HTTP AI provider URLs are rejected. Credential-bearing provider requests do not follow redirects. AI Side Translator works with supported user-configured AI providers through bring-your-own-key (BYOK) connections. Privacy policy: https://privacy.zhezhongtech.com/
