Overview

Export AI chats from ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini & more to Markdown or JSON.

AI Chat Exporter is a lightweight, privacy-focused browser extension that allows you to save, back up, and transfer your conversations from web-based AI assistants. With a single click, convert your entire chat history into cleanly formatted Markdown (.md), structured schema-compliant JSON (.json), standalone HTML, or clean PNG image snapshots. KEY FEATURES ------------ - One-Click Export: Trigger quick exports directly from your browser toolbar popup or Chrome's native Side Panel without interrupting your workflow. - Clean Markdown: Preserves rich formatting, headers, lists, tables, inline code, syntax-highlighted code blocks, and LaTeX math equations. - Structured JSON: Generates normalized, schema-compliant JSON files containing message roles, timestamps, and full conversational threads for developers and data analysis. - PNG Snapshots & HTML: Generate shareable PNG image previews of chat threads or standalone HTML documents preserving original UI presentation. - Cross-Model Continuation: Instantly transfer active chat context between different platforms (e.g., pass your Claude discussion directly into ChatGPT or Gemini to continue prompting). - Clipboard Rich-Text Copying: Copy formatted chat content straight to your clipboard for instant pasting into Notion, Obsidian, document editors, or emails. - 🔒 100% Privacy-First: All processing happens entirely within your local browser. No data is ever sent to external servers or third parties. See the full Privacy Policy linked on the extension's homepage. PRIVACY & TRUST --------------- AI Chat Exporter is built on a strict no-data-collection principle: - No personal data collected: The extension does not collect, store, or transmit any personal identification information (PII), chat content, or usage data to any external server — ever. - Runs entirely on your device: It works by reading your active chat page locally, within your own browser session, for the sole purpose of formatting and saving the output to your Downloads folder. - Minimal permissions: The extension only requests the permissions it genuinely needs — access to the active tab on supported AI platforms, and local browser storage for saving your format preferences. Your preferences are kept fully offline and are never synced to any server. - No analytics or tracking: The extension uses no third-party analytics, telemetry, or tracking services of any kind. - Free of charge: AI Chat Exporter is and always will be completely free to use. No subscription, no premium tier, no upsell. SUPPORTED PLATFORMS & EXTRACTION DETAILS ----------------------------------------- Each platform integration uses tailored extraction mechanisms (authenticated session API endpoints or high-fidelity DOM structure mapping) to capture complete data without truncating long chats: - ChatGPT (chatgpt.com): Uses internal session APIs (with DOM fallback) to retrieve complete, uncompressed conversation trees, including reasoning/thinking steps, code blocks, Canvas outputs, web search queries, and uploaded images. - Claude (claude.ai): Uses internal organization APIs (with DOM fallback) to extract full message trees, artifacts, rendered tool outputs, user attachments, and reasoning traces. - DeepSeek (chat.deepseek.com): Leverages internal session APIs (with DOM fallback) to fetch complete message histories, preserving DeepSeek-R1 reasoning/thought traces, formulas, and syntax-highlighted code blocks. - Google Gemini (gemini.google.com): Performs high-fidelity DOM parsing to extract rich conversational trees, expanded reasoning traces, generated tables, inline images, search sources, and web citations. - Google AI Studio (aistudio.google.com): Uses DOM parsing to extract structured multi-turn prompts, system instructions, and parameter-tuned model responses directly from the workspace interface. - Perplexity AI (perplexity.ai): Reads the rendered DOM page structure to capture answer text alongside inline search citations, web source links, and follow-up threads. - Microsoft Copilot (copilot.microsoft.com): Parses DOM elements to capture conversational turns, web search reference citations, and formatted code blocks from the Bing and Copilot interfaces. - NotebookLM (notebooklm.google.com): Parses DOM components to extract notebook chat interactions and studio response notes into organized output formats. - Meta AI (meta.ai): Extracts prompt-response loops, rendered generated images, and formatted text blocks directly from the DOM structure. - Google Cloud Assist (console.cloud.google.com/gemini): Parses DOM elements to capture GCP infrastructure context, technical guidance responses, and generated CLI script blocks from Cloud Console chats. - Qwen (chat.qwenlm.ai): Uses DOM parsing to extract multi-turn chat text, code blocks, and mathematical notation. - Mistral AI (chat.mistral.ai): Parses DOM elements to capture Le Chat conversation history, system responses, and code snippets. - Z.ai (z.ai): Parses conversation history and assistant outputs locally using DOM-based structure mapping. - Google Search AI Overviews: Uses DOM parsing to extract summarized AI overview blocks and web source links generated during search queries. OPEN SOURCE & ACTIVE DEVELOPMENT --------------------------------- AI Chat Exporter is free, open-source software. The complete source code is publicly available on GitHub under the Mozilla Public License 2.0 (MPL-2.0), meaning you can inspect, audit, fork, or contribute to it freely. The extension is actively maintained. AI chat platforms update their interfaces frequently, and we track those changes to keep parsers working correctly. Bug reports, feature requests, and pull requests are very welcome — community feedback is what shapes the direction of this project. - Source code: https://github.com/Rat-S/ai-chat-exporter - Feedback & issue reports: https://ai-chat-exporter.covai.org/feedback.html - License: Mozilla Public License 2.0 (MPL-2.0) OPEN SOURCE LIBRARIES USED --------------------------- The extension is built on well-established, auditable open-source libraries — no hidden or proprietary components: - Turndown.js: Converts rendered HTML chat content into clean, readable Markdown. (MIT License) - html2canvas: Renders the chat thread into a PNG image entirely within your browser. (MIT License) - KaTeX: Renders LaTeX and mathematical equations in HTML exports. (MIT License) - Prism.js: Provides syntax highlighting for code blocks in HTML exports and previews. (MIT License) All libraries run locally within your browser. None of them make external network requests or transmit any data.
