Make the web more comfortable to read with Afterdark. Afterdark brings a dark appearance to websites, including sites without their own dark mode. It adapts backgrounds, text, links, borders, and controls while keeping the page's original fonts and layout. It uses a dynamic color engine instead of inverting the entire screen, helping photographs and videos retain their natural colors. YOUR WEBSITE, YOUR CHOICE Turn dark mode on for a website and Afterdark remembers that hostname. Your choice stays saved as you navigate, reload pages, and restart Chrome. ALWAYS ON Enable Always on to keep supported websites dark, including open tabs and websites you visit next. Turn off This website to make an exception while keeping other sites dark. View and remove exceptions under Excluded websites. Turn Always on off to return to your saved individual website choices. 40 LANGUAGES Afterdark's controls follow Chrome's interface language by default, with English as the fallback. Prefer another language? Click the globe and current language in the popup header, uncheck Automatic (Chrome language), and choose from the dropdown. Your choice applies immediately and stays saved on your device. Includes Simplified and Traditional Chinese and right-to-left layouts for Arabic, Hebrew, and Persian. All translations are included in the extension and work without a translation service. Webpage content is not translated. MAKE IT COMFORTABLE Choose Charcoal, Midnight, or Warm. Adjust brightness, contrast, and warmth to suit your preference. Appearance changes apply to enabled websites, and Reset appearance restores the default palette and sliders. KEEPS UP WITH THE PAGE Afterdark adapts supported content as it loads, including many embedded frames and web components. Use Alt+Shift+D to toggle the current website in either mode, including adding or removing an Always on exception. The shortcut can be customized in Chrome's extension shortcut settings. START WHEN YOU ARE READY Afterdark starts off. Open a website, click the Afterdark icon, and turn on This website or Always on. No account or subscription is required. HOW YOUR DATA IS USED Afterdark accesses webpage content, styles, and the current website address to create a dark appearance and apply your choices. Settings, selected hostnames, and excluded hostnames are stored locally on your device. Its engine can also cache stylesheet text and image analysis in the website's browser session storage. When necessary, the extension requests CSS and image resources from their source servers to analyze colors; those servers receive normal network request information. The extension's background resource helper omits cookies, authorization credentials, and referrers. Afterdark has no analytics, advertising, or developer-operated data collection server, and does not send your page content or saved settings to its developer. COMPATIBILITY Afterdark works on supported HTTP and HTTPS websites. Chrome blocks extensions on its internal pages, New Tab, the Chrome Web Store, and other extensions' pages. The browser toolbar and built-in PDF viewer are not themed. Text inside images, videos, or canvas, some closed web components, and restricted resources may not adapt.
