AccentShed
Overview
Practice American English pronunciation on any webpage — highlights sounds, plays audio, tracks 35 phonemes with the CMU Dictionary
AccentShed turns any webpage into a pronunciation lesson. Select the sounds you want to practice, and every word containing those sounds gets highlighted directly in the text you're reading. Color-coded backgrounds identify each sound category. Underlines mark the exact letters that produce the target sound — not the whole word. Click any highlighted word to hear it spoken in American English. Click again for slow playback. 35 sounds across 8 categories: - R-colored vowels (ER, AR, OR, EAR, AIR, OOR) - TH sounds (voiceless and voiced) - Short and long vowels - Diphthongs - Schwa - Consonants (R, L, V, W, S, Z, and more) Built-in contrast presets for commonly confused sounds: Peak vs Pick, Think vs This, West vs Vest, Luke vs Look, Right vs Light. Hover over any highlighted word to see the sound name, rhyming words, and homophones. Powered by the Carnegie Mellon University Pronouncing Dictionary — over 100,000 words with accurate phoneme mappings based on actual pronunciation, not spelling.
