Overview

A 108-bead mala counter for naam jaap, in your toolbar. Free, no account, no ads — your count stays on your device.

A digital mala for your browser. Tap the arch to count. The 108 beads fill as you go, and when a round closes a bell marks it — the way a guru bead does under the thumb. Jaap Daily is a naam jaap counter for Chrome. Whether you write it jaap, japa or jap, it is the same practice: one naam, repeated, counted. This keeps the count for you while you work, and asks Chrome for one permission to do it. WHAT YOU CAN COUNT Thirteen naams come with the extension, each with its own artwork — Ram and Hare Krishna among them, and Waheguru for anyone keeping a Gurmukhi practice. The full list, with the artwork, is at https://jaapdaily.com/extension If the naam you recite is not there, type it. Your keyboard's own script is kept exactly as you write it, in Devanagari or Gurmukhi or Tamil or Roman letters. Nothing is transliterated, shortened or corrected. A typed naam arrives on the Om artwork and counts the same as any other. COUNTING WITHOUT LOOKING Alt+Shift+K counts one with the popup closed, and the toolbar badge shows where you are in the round. This is the desktop answer to counting on a phone with the volume buttons, for anyone who chants with their eyes closed. Alt+Shift+J opens the counter. Space and Enter count while it is open. Both shortcuts can be changed: open chrome://extensions/shortcuts and set whatever your hands prefer. If another extension has already claimed the combination, that page is where you will see the clash. A MALA THE SIZE YOU USE 27, 54, 108 or 1008 beads. The ring fills by proportion, so a shorter mala still reads as one full round, and the bell still marks the end of it. The bell can be switched off. WHAT IT REMEMBERS Today's count, your lifetime total, and a daily streak. The day rolls over on your own calendar day, not on a server's. A streak continues only if you counted yesterday — a missed day starts it again rather than quietly carrying on, because a streak that survives a day you did not practise is not telling you anything. Undo takes back a tap. Reset clears the current round without touching your totals. PRIVACY — THE SHORT VERSION The extension collects nothing. No analytics, no telemetry, no crash reporting, and no network request of any kind. It asks Chrome for one permission, storage, so your count, your chosen naam and your settings can be remembered on your own computer. That is the only permission it requests, which is why Chrome shows no access warning when you install it. It asks for no access to any website you visit. It cannot see your browsing history, the pages you open, the tabs you have, or anything you type anywhere else. There are no content scripts and no host permissions — if that sounds technical, the short version is that the extension has no way to reach the pages you are looking at. The artwork, the fonts and the bell are packaged inside it. That is why it works with no internet connection at all, on a plane or in a room with no signal. Full detail: https://jaapdaily.com/privacy/ A BIGGER SCREEN WHEN YOU WANT ONE One tap on "Full" carries the naam you are counting, how far through the round you are, and the rounds you have finished across to the counter on jaapdaily.com, so you can continue there instead of starting again. That information travels inside the link itself and never reaches a server. Worth knowing: the extension keeps its own count. A browser extension cannot read another site's storage, so the numbers in this popup, on the website and in the phone app are three separate tallies that meet at the moment you hand one over. If you want one continuous count everywhere, the phone app with sign-in is where that lives today. WHO IT IS FOR People who keep a daily jaap and spend their day at a computer. A round between meetings. A mala while a build runs. Ekadashi or Navratri at a desk, when the phone is in another room. If your practice is already on your phone, this is not a replacement — it is the counter for the hours the phone is not in your hand. WHAT IT DOES NOT DO It does not replace your new tab page. It does not show notifications. It does not sign you in, ask for an email, or create an account. It has no ads and no paid tier, and it never will. It runs on Chrome on a computer — Windows, macOS, Linux or ChromeOS. Chrome on a phone does not run extensions; that is what the app is for. It is not published for Firefox or Edge yet. ON YOUR PHONE AND WATCH Jaap Daily is also a free app for iPhone, Android and Apple Watch. It carries 74 naams and 39 mantras, a library of 114 aartis and chalisas with Devanagari, Roman transliteration and English meaning, volume-button counting, Focus mode, a dual counter for anushthan vows, and counting on the wrist with the Digital Crown. iPhone: https://jaapdaily.com/go/ios Android: https://jaapdaily.com/go/android FREE, AND WHY No ads, no subscription, no paid tier — in the extension, in the app and on the website. Donations made through the app go to SPARK WA Foundation, a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit, for its non-profit work.
