The Mogao Caves, also known as the Thousand Buddha Grottoes, are located near Dunhuang in Gansu Province. These caves are a treasure trove of Buddhist art, containing one of the most extensive collections of Buddhist murals and statues in the world. Carved into a cliff face between the 4th and 14th centuries, the Mogao Caves were an important religious and cultural center along the Silk Road. The site comprises 735 caves, with over 2,000 painted sculptures and 45,000 square meters of murals depicting Buddhist stories, historical events, and everyday life. The Mogao Caves are a UNESCO World Heritage site and a must-visit for those interested in ancient art and the cultural exchanges that shaped the Silk Road.
