5'English brings the free listening lessons of ELLLO into the side panel: over 1,500 conversations, one-minute videos and grammar lessons, most of them 1 to 5 minutes long, each with its script, a quiz and the key vocabulary. Listen while you browse, read along, select any word to see what it means, and bookmark the ones you want to keep. LESSONS FROM A1 TO C1 Over 2,000 lessons, sorted by level. • Conversations: over 1,500 natural conversations between English speakers from around the world, all in one searchable list or by level from A2 to C1 • Mixer: 150 lessons where six people share their thoughts on the same topic • Short Talks: One Minute English videos where a speaker answers a question in about a minute, from A1 to C1, and short stories people tell about their life • Grammar: 125 Sound Grammar lessons, 25 per level, each with four short conversations using the grammar point • Pick your level and search by topic, speaker or country • Your best quiz score shows next to each lesson • Save the conversations and talks you love, and find them all in the Saved list of their tab • Find the lessons you opened lately in Recent; the ones you listened to the end show Listened EVERY LESSON Listen, read, check and learn. • Watch the video or listen to the audio: jump back 5 seconds, loop a part from A to B, and play at 0.5×, 0.75×, 1× or 1.25× • Read the script with the key words highlighted, or hide it to listen first • Follow the script: in the lessons with an audio recording, the sentence being said is highlighted as it plays. Click a sentence to hear it again, or loop it until you catch every word • Exact timing: 5'English listens to the recording on your computer and times every sentence (a speech model downloaded once; nothing is sent anywhere) • Answer the quiz and see right away what you got right • Learn the key words and phrases, each with its recording, IPA, meaning and examples • Grammar explanations, gap-fills and puzzles GRAMMAR GUIDE, IRREGULAR VERBS AND PHRASES • Grammar Guide: the tenses, conditionals, passive voice, reported speech, relative clauses and comparisons, each with its forms, uses and examples to listen to, and a search box ("past perfect", "since"…) • Irregular Verbs: V1, V2 and V3 of every irregular verb, found by any of its forms, with their IPA, to hear and translate • Phrases: 800+ phrases learners need, by level from A1 to C2: adjectives with their preposition (good at, afraid of), phrasal verbs (give up, turn sth off) and prepositional phrases (on time, by mistake), each with its meaning, IPA and an example to hear, to translate and bookmark TRANSLATE Never get stuck on a word. • Select any word or sentence in a lesson, an article or the Grammar Guide to see its translation in 100+ languages, its IPA, other meanings and definitions, and hear it normally or slowly • The Translate tab translates anything you type or paste, and you can right-click selected text on any page and choose Translate with 5'English BOOKMARKS Keep the words you learn. • Bookmark a lesson's key words, any words you select, or a translation • Find them all in the Bookmarks tab, with their meaning or translation and the lesson they come from: listen to them, search them, clear them • Review them as flashcards: a word you remember comes back in 1, 3, 7, 14, then 30 days DAILY GOAL A few minutes every day. • Set a goal of 5 to 30 minutes of listening a day, and watch the ring under the logo fill up • Keep your streak going, and see your last week/month • Turn on a daily reminder, at the time you choose, for the days you haven't listened yet LEARN TIPS Short guides on how to learn English, improve your listening, practice speaking, and learn grammar and vocabulary, and ELLLO's articles on learning English through listening: accents, word stress, tone, a study plan that works… Read them, select any word to translate it, or hear them read aloud. SETTINGS • Open 5'English in the side panel, or in a floating window of its own that stays open beside your other windows • The tab the panel opens with, or the last one you used • Light, dark or system theme, and four text sizes • The language to translate lessons into, the audio speed and the slow speech speed • Your keyboard shortcut, with a button to change it • Back up everything to a file and import it in another browser, or export your bookmarks as CSV for Anki or Quizlet • Reset all data: delete your settings, saved lessons, bookmarks and quiz scores in one click HOW TO USE 1. Pin 5'English to your toolbar. 2. Click the 5'English icon or press Ctrl + E (Option + E on Mac) to open the side panel. 3. Pick Conversations, Short Talks or Grammar in the menu on the right of the panel, choose your level and open a lesson. 4. Listen, read the script, answer the quiz and learn the vocabulary. Select any word to translate it, and bookmark the ones to remember. 5. Open Settings, at the bottom of the menu, to choose the language to translate into, the theme and the text size. The logo at the top of the menu tells you more about 5'English. PRIVACY 5'English has no servers of its own, so the developer never sees what you do. The panel loads the lessons you open from elllo.org. Exact timing downloads a speech recognition model from Hugging Face once, then listens to the lesson's recording on your computer only. The words you choose to translate or hear are sent to Google's translation service, only to translate them or read them aloud. Your settings, levels, quiz scores, listening time, saved lessons and bookmarks stay in your browser. 5'English is an independent project and is not affiliated with or endorsed by ELLLO or Google.
