TYPING SPEED PRACTICE 4.1 — MEASURE YOUR TYPING, IN YOUR OWN LANGUAGE Typing Speed Practice is a free, offline typing test for Chrome. Pick a passage, choose 15, 30, 60 or 120 seconds, and start typing — the timer begins on your first keystroke. Version 4.1 is the largest update this extension has had: a complete redesign, a rewritten scoring engine, full translation into 43 languages, and fixes for more than twenty bugs, several of which meant earlier versions reported speeds that were simply wrong. WHAT WE FIXED Your speed was wrong on every test that was not exactly 60 seconds long. The old formula multiplied by the chosen duration instead of by 60, so a three-minute passage reported roughly three times your real speed and a five-second one about a twelfth of it. Scoring now uses the standard character-based formula — characters divided by five, divided by minutes elapsed — so a score means the same thing whichever duration you pick. The last word of a passage could never be typed: the test ended the moment you began it, and the exact-match check never ran, so an empty word scored as correct and inflated your word count and accuracy. Holding the space bar raised your score, because every space-separated token counted as a word. Net WPM could also render as a negative number; it is now floored at zero, and accuracy is measured per keystroke — keystrokes minus errors, divided by keystrokes. A test in progress was lost whenever Chrome idled the extension out: session state lived in memory Chrome discards after about thirty seconds, so the page could reload with no text. State now lives in session storage, and the duration is clamped on every read, so a zero-second test cannot start. "Start new test" silently did nothing while a test was running. The background service now tracks its own test tab by id and reuses it — no extra permission needed — and closing that tab clears the session instead of leaving the extension convinced a test is still running. Dark-mode users were forced into light mode until they touched the theme switch; your system preference is now the default. Passage lengths did not match their time limits — one text needed about 187 WPM to finish. We also fixed a carousel item that could not be selected, a results screen hardcoded in English, invalid markup, and a signing artifact that stopped the extension loading unpacked. Typing in Japanese, Korean, Chinese or Thai was impossible in 4.0: those languages go through an input method editor, and the redesigned typing surface ignored the keys an IME produces. Input is now read from committed text, and a composed character costs exactly one keystroke, the same as a directly typed one. Pasting and dropping are still blocked, so scores cannot be faked. Arabic, Hebrew and Persian rendered mirrored text inside a left-to-right layout. The page now takes its direction from the active locale, and the parts that must not mirror — measurements, the caret, the results chart and dialog buttons — behave correctly. WHAT WE ADDED One page instead of three. The passage list, duration control, typing area and results now share a single screen. Passages are cards tagged by category — Warm-up, Space, Nature, Literature, Business and your own text — led by a pangram warm-up that replaces a five-word passage finishing in two seconds. Live feedback while you type. A large countdown that turns amber under fifteen seconds and red under five, live WPM, live accuracy and a progress bar. Every character turns green or red as you go, a wrong space appears as a red block, and the caret blinks only while you are idle. A results screen worth reading. A big net WPM figure that counts up on reveal, a speed-over-time graph with net and gross lines, and tiles for accuracy, correct characters, mistakes, consistency and elapsed time. Try again or move to the next passage without leaving it. Your history, kept locally. Your last hundred results stay on your own machine. The popup shows your best WPM, your ten-test average and your total tests, and the results screen celebrates a new personal best. Your own text. Paste anything you want to practise with and use it like a built-in passage. Keyboard shortcuts — Tab restarts a run, Esc resets it — plus a quick-tips popover and a theme toggle. 43 languages, fully translated: every interface string, category tag and passage. Warm-up text is authored per language, so each locale uses its own canonical pangram where one exists and natural prose where it does not. Faster and lighter. Around a megabyte of unused libraries, stylesheets and images is gone, and fonts ship with the extension, so nothing is fetched from the internet and everything works offline. Still just one permission: storage. No browsing history, no account, no analytics. Your results never leave your computer.
