Cheongryu is a Chrome extension that changes South Korean standard Korean text on web pages into Munhwaŏ / Korean-style expressions used in North Korea. All conversion is processed directly inside the user’s browser, and page content is not sent to an external server. The translation feature uses Chrome’s on-device translation. If the required local translation model is not available, it may be downloaded from Google’s servers. ■ Main Features * Vocabulary Conversion Changes selected South Korean words into Munhwaŏ-style expressions. Example: 옥수수 → 강냉이, 서버 → 봉사기 * Initial Sound Rule Restoration Restores Sino-Korean words affected by South Korea’s initial sound rule to North Korean-style spelling. Example: 노동 → 로동, 여성 → 녀성, 역사 → 력사 * Foreign Word Spelling Conversion Changes South Korean-style foreign word spellings into forms closer to North Korean foreign word notation. Example: 컴퓨터 → 콤퓨터, 에너지 → 에네르기 * Ending Conversion Adjusts some word endings to Munhwaŏ-style forms. Example: 되어 → 되여, 고마워 → 고마와 * Removal of 사이시옷 Removes 사이시옷 from certain words and changes them closer to their original form. Example: 나뭇잎 → 나무잎, 촛불 → 초불 * Spacing Correction Adjusts spacing for dependent nouns, auxiliary verbs, and similar expressions according to Korean spacing rules. * Punctuation Conversion Double quotation marks can be changed to 《 》, and single quotation marks to 〈 〉. This option is enabled by default. ■ Additional Features * Juche Calendar Conversion Converts Gregorian years into Juche years. This feature is turned off by default and can be enabled manually. It does not apply to years before 1912. * Kiwi Morphological Analyzer Support Uses a WebAssembly-based morphological analyzer to support more accurate spacing conversion. * Chilsongmun Hanja Disambiguation Model Integration To determine initial-sound rule restoration more accurately, Chilsongmun uses a precise model instead of simple one-way replacement, enabling higher-quality conversion. * Per-Feature ON/OFF Settings Vocabulary, initial sound rule restoration, foreign word conversion, spacing, punctuation, and other features can be turned on or off separately. * Excluded Site Management Sites where conversion should not be applied can be added to an exclusion list. * Automatic Translation Detects websites or text written in Korean and opens an automatic translation window. This feature is turned off by default and can be enabled manually. In the English version, it provides Korean → English translation. This feature uses Chrome’s on-device Translation API. ■ Notes Automatic conversion is disabled in input fields, code editors, and other areas where users directly type text. Conversion is also disabled by default on .kp domains. On some video subtitle sites such as YouTube or Netflix, vocabulary conversion may not be applied. Depending on the structure of the website, some pages may not be converted correctly.
