جاء مؤشر مسبار بوصفه مؤشرًا لصدقية وسائل الإعلام في الفضاء العمومي، ليُحلّل مصادر الأخبار ويعمل على تصنيف المواقع بحسب درجة صدقيّتها التي تتحدّد وفق معايير شفافة، تقوم على استبعاد أيّ ظنٍّ أو تخمينٍ أو تقديرٍ شخصيّ، وتتمثّل بإحصاء عدد الأخبار الزائفة التي نشرتها تلك المواقع خلال فترة زمنية مُحدّدة ورصَدها فريق مسبار وتحقّق منها
